Oscars to Finally Honor Stunt Work with New Category in 2028

Stunt performers are finally being recognized at the Oscars. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that a new category, Achievement in Stunt Design, will be added starting with the 2028 Oscars.
This new award will honor the best stunts in movies and will be given out at the 100th annual Academy Awards, which will celebrate films released in 2027. The official rules for this new category will be shared in 2027.
Right now, it’s not clear if the award will be part of the main Oscars show on TV. The Academy said they would announce that later.
“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” said AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang in a statement. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”
This is the first new category added to the Oscars since Achievement in Casting, which was announced in 2024. That award will be given out for the first time at the next Oscars ceremony.
Fans of action films and stunt work have long asked for this moment. Now, the hard work and creativity of stunt teams will finally be honored on one of Hollywood’s biggest nights.
