A new teaser for Outer Banks season 5 has provided fans with their first glimpse of the aftermath following the shocking death of JJ Maybank, as showcased in footage presented at Netflix’s Upfront 2026 event.
JJ, portrayed by Rudy Pankow, met his end in the season 4 part 2 finale, a moment that caught many viewers off guard since he was one of the original Pogues. The latter half of season 4 premiered on November 7, 2024, and fans have been eagerly awaiting over a year for the continuation of the story. Season 5 has been confirmed as the series’ final season, set to debut in 2026, although Netflix has yet to announce a specific release date.
During the Upfront 2026 presentation, Netflix unveiled a teaser for the concluding season. The clip suggests that the Pogues find themselves in custody, facing a hearing in Croatia. Visual cues, including police uniforms and flags, indicate the new setting, aligning with reports that filming occurred in Dubrovnik.
Madelyn Cline also attended the event and discussed how JJ’s death influences the narrative moving forward. She remarked, “This season, our characters start out in an interesting place because of last season’s shocking finale, we’ll get to explore that. And as always, the stakes are high and the relationships between characters are going to be tested. We also tried to bring everyone home and wrap up the series in a way that the fans will hopefully love.”
She expressed an emotional sentiment regarding the show’s conclusion, stating, “I’m sad but I’m also extremely grateful. We built such a bond, and y’all are literally my best friends. It’s gonna be insane not working with you guys anymore.”
Other cast members shared their reflections at the presentation. Carlacia Grant highlighted the show’s connection with its audience, saying, “My favorite part has always been how people see themselves in us, our friendship really keeps their friendship together. It’s so cool and so loving.” Chase Stokes also expressed gratitude to viewers, stating, “Thank you to everybody that has tuned in these back six years, you have given us more than we could ever give back.”
The teaser raises intriguing questions about the plot, particularly regarding the Pogues’ presence in Croatia after their previous journey to Lisbon, Portugal, while pursuing Chandler Groff, who was associated with JJ’s demise.
