‘Outlander’ is entering its final season, and the secrecy surrounding it is at an all-time high. Based on the beloved books by Diana Gabaldon, the series is now in its eighth and concluding season. Cast members have revealed that even they were kept in the dark about how the story would ultimately unfold during filming.

Starring Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser and Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser, the show has taken a unique approach for its final season. Instead of filming one definitive ending, the production team opted to shoot multiple versions of the concluding scenes.

During a set visit interview, Sam Heughan shared, “We’re going to shoot various endings. I don’t know which one they’ll use.” His remarks highlight the uncertainty even he faced regarding which version would make it to the final cut.

Caitríona Balfe also discussed the unusual filming process. She noted that showrunner Matthew B. Roberts kept everything tightly under wraps. Balfe expressed her anxiety, saying, “Our showrunner Matt Robert is keeping everything so close to his chest. I’m worried about what we’re going to be doing. I am such a control freak. I like to know, and we don’t know, and it’s driving me crazy.” She mentioned that the team was working step by step rather than having a comprehensive view of the season’s plan.

This filming strategy marks a departure from the usual process for ‘Outlander’. In previous seasons, the actors typically had a clear understanding of the storyline and episode structure. This time, they often found themselves filming without a complete grasp of the narrative direction. This information comes from on-set interviews and press coverage during filming in Scotland.

The rationale behind filming multiple endings is likely to maintain the secrecy of the final story. ‘Outlander’ boasts a dedicated fanbase, and spoilers tend to circulate rapidly online. By creating different versions, the production aims to minimize the risk of the true ending leaking before its premiere.

This technique isn’t entirely new for the franchise. The spin-off ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ reportedly employed similar tactics, with some actors unaware of which ending was final until later.

Sam Heughan reiterated this situation during a talk show appearance, stating, “I actually don’t know the ending. We shot multiple endings, I was there, but I don’t know how it ends. I’ll be watching with you all.”

As the final season approaches, anticipation is building as the story of Claire and Jamie reaches its conclusion, even as the original books by Diana Gabaldon remain unfinished. This uncertainty has left fans eager to see how the show will tie everything together.

For now, even the lead actors are in the same boat as the audience, waiting to discover the true ending when the final episode airs.
