‘ParaNorman’ Streaming on Disney+ Just in Time for Halloween Season
Every fall, streaming platforms engage in a familiar routine of refreshing their catalogs and repositioning older titles for maximum seasonal appeal. This strategy is particularly effective for films that may not have received their due upon release, as a timely rediscovery can significantly enhance a film’s reputation beyond its initial box office performance.
Currently, on Disney+, a stop-motion horror-comedy has made its way to the number 10 spot on the platform’s Top 10 Movies chart. This film shares the spotlight with new arrivals like ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ and ‘LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian’, alongside fellow animated newcomer ‘Coraline’, which recently secured the number two position on the same list.
The film making waves is ‘ParaNorman’, which debuted on Disney+ and Hulu at the beginning of September as part of a robust fall lineup that also features ‘Coraline’, as reported by Variety. This pairing is no coincidence, as both films originate from the same studio and were intentionally bundled together to align with the platform’s broader Halloween-themed programming.
This shared studio is Laika, and the timing coincides with a significant milestone beyond just a routine content drop. As noted by IMDb, Laika is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and part of the festivities included a theatrical re-release of ‘ParaNorman’ this Halloween season in newly remastered 2D and 3D formats, following the successful re-release of ‘Coraline’ planned for 2024.
The earlier re-release of ‘Coraline’ set a remarkable precedent, becoming the highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time with $56 million in global earnings, according to Bloody Disgusting. Laika appears to be banking on ‘ParaNorman’ to ride a similar wave of nostalgia, initiating its own anniversary celebrations with a theatrical strategy that proved effective previously.
However, the re-release was not merely a straightforward rerun. It was accompanied by a brand-new short film titled ‘ParaNorman: The Thrifting’, directed by Laika’s lead character designer Thibault LeClercq and penned by original screenwriter Chris Butler. As reported by Animation Magazine, the short features Finn Wolfhard and Anna Kendrick, who reprises her role as Norman’s older sister Courtney, further expanding the world of Blithe Hollow beyond the original film.
Despite its modest initial performance, Butler’s original film has garnered a dedicated following over the years, earning $107.1 million against a $60 million budget and receiving Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations for Best Animated Feature. Laika’s marketing chief, David Burke, described the film as a “breakthrough” for the studio, highlighting its emotional depth and visual innovation.
Kodi Smit-McPhee’s voice performance as Norman has also contributed to the film’s cult status over time, especially as his career has flourished, including a critically acclaimed role in ‘The Power of the Dog’. This kind of retrospective recognition often leads curious viewers back to earlier works, and ‘ParaNorman’ stands to benefit from this trend as Halloween approaches and it finds a new streaming home.
