More than 15 years after the original film hit theaters, a sequel to ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ is officially in the works.

Director Peter Jackson recently announced during the Cannes Film Festival that development has commenced on the long-anticipated follow-up. He shared that he is currently writing the screenplay and intends to direct the film himself.

The sequel has been a topic of discussion for years, but fans began to lose hope as time passed without significant updates. The first film, released in 2011 and directed by Steven Spielberg, featured Jackson as a producer. Initially, the plan was for Spielberg to helm the first installment while Jackson would take over directing duties for the sequel.

However, Jackson became occupied with his work on ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ and the subsequent Hobbit trilogy, which delayed the Tintin sequel further.

Despite the lengthy wait, the team behind the film never entirely abandoned the project. Reports over the years indicated that much of the original cast is expected to return, including Jamie Bell as Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thomson and Thompson.

The first Tintin film followed the young reporter and his dog Snowy as they became embroiled in a perilous mystery involving hidden treasure. The movie utilized motion-capture animation and blended fast-paced action with comedy and adventure, reminiscent of classic Spielberg films from the 1980s.

Upon its release, the film received mostly positive reviews. It currently boasts a strong score on Rotten Tomatoes and was lauded for its animation, action sequences, and visual style. Many critics noted that Spielberg infused the movie with real energy, capturing the adventurous spirit of the original Tintin comics created by Hergé.

Critics also highlighted the chemistry between Tintin and Captain Haddock, particularly praising Andy Serkis’ performance. Some reviewers even regarded it as one of the best animated adventure films of that period.

However, not all feedback was entirely favorable. A few critics felt that the motion-capture animation appeared odd at times, especially in close-up facial scenes. Others believed the story leaned too heavily on action and moved too swiftly in certain areas. Despite these critiques, the film cultivated a dedicated fanbase over the years, with many viewers considering it one of Spielberg’s most underrated works.

The film also performed well at the box office, grossing approximately $374 million worldwide against a reported budget of $135 million, marking it as a commercial success, even if it did not achieve blockbuster status in the United States.

Jackson’s recent update is the clearest indication yet that the sequel is indeed happening. However, fans might still face a lengthy wait. Animated films, particularly those employing motion-capture technology, require years to complete. Since Jackson has only just confirmed he has begun writing the script, the movie is likely still several years away from release.

For now, fans of Tintin can take comfort in knowing that the sequel is no longer just a concept discussed behind closed doors. After years of speculation and delays, the adventure appears ready to continue.
