Few horror-adjacent concepts resonate as much as the fear of not being able to trust the person closest to you. Hulu’s latest comedy mystery transforms this anxiety into a coming-of-age puzzle, and the ‘Phony’ ending leaves many questions unanswered. The first two episodes premiered together on Tuesday, October 20, with new episodes set to release weekly.

Created by Nick Paley, who wrote and directed the pilot and is known for ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’, the series features Anthony King as co-showrunner, with Connie Britton and Drew Goddard among the executive producers. The series consists of eight episodes, concluding on December 1.

At its heart, ‘Phony’ tells the story of a teenager who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident, only to discover that his mother, his sole parent and best friend, appears to have been replaced by an impostor. Sam Nivola stars as Sonny Cooke, while Britton plays his mother, Ellen, who is also the principal at his high school. The cast includes Mahaela Park, Grace Brennan, Maliq Johnson, Colter Lee, and Meera Syal.

Sonny is a well-liked and charming character, sharing a uniquely close relationship with Ellen. Just before an intimate moment with his girlfriend, Chloe, he crashes his car. Upon waking, he notices that Ellen doesn’t quite resemble Connie Britton anymore.

Much of the pilot focuses on establishing this intriguing premise. Sonny struggles to identify what is wrong and finds that few believe his concerns. This familiar setup, when centered around a teenage boy, transforms a horror-style mystery into a lighthearted teen comedy.

The second episode, “Crosby, Stills and Nash,” continues after Sonny spends the weekend evading his alleged impostor mom. He returns to school eager to seek help and begins to discern whom he can trust. Surprisingly, some allies are not who he expected: Chloe and his best friend, Vogel, are skeptical, while his former crush Mallory and her quirky cousin Weldon are supportive.

This episode also reveals that Sonny’s narration is a dialogue with a private investigator named Sharla, whom he consults for assistance. The plot thickens as it hints that Ellen’s doppelganger may be involved in something illicit, potentially financially motivated. Tension escalates when a dead body is seen being dragged into a van in the woods, leaving viewers uncertain about the identity of both the victim and the perpetrator.

The conclusion does not definitively confirm that Ellen has been replaced, nor does it dismiss the possibility that Sonny is merely imagining things after his head injury. However, it leans toward Sonny being correct, especially with the body in the van indicating real stakes. The identities of both the victim and the person dragging the body remain a mystery.

The series also plants recurring clues. Early episodes feature a beaver observing nighttime crimes, a humorous touch that suggests Sonny’s paranoia may have some basis in reality. Meanwhile, Sonny attempts to keep Chloe uninformed, a decision that could have serious consequences, especially as he collaborates with Mallory.

There’s a real-world parallel here. Capgras syndrome is a condition where an individual believes that a loved one has been replaced by an identical double, a theme that the series explores to its extremes. Whether Sonny’s situation is a symptom or a genuine enigma is, as one critic noted, the crux of the story.

Early reviews have been positive. RogerEbert.com described it as one of the most intriguing and unsettling new series of the year after previewing four episodes. Another critic awarded it 5 out of 5, commending its ability to keep viewers guessing and noting that it takes a full half-hour to find its rhythm.

However, not all feedback has been entirely favorable. One review characterized it as pleasant yet mildly captivating, suggesting that the investigation serves as a MacGuffin to maintain viewer interest, while the true narrative centers on the unraveling mother-son relationship. Another critic remarked that the distinction between the original Ellen and the impostor was somewhat too apparent.

The next episode, “Reverse Cuckoo Situation,” will be available on October 27, featuring Sonny stuck at home with Ellen as he sets a trap to expose her lies. With a body in the woods and Chloe still unaware, the pressure on Sonny is bound to intensify.
