Pixar Defends ‘Toy Story 5’ Says Film Is Crafted by Artists Not AI
New insights about Toy Story 5 were revealed by Pixar filmmakers during a press preview in Anaheim, as reported by Variety. Their comments shed light on the studio’s stance regarding technology, particularly artificial intelligence, in the film’s production.
Director Andrew Stanton emphasized that the film was entirely created by humans, not AI systems.
He stated, “We’ve had machine learning since the beginning of Pixar as far as figuring things out for you occasionally, but it’s always been to make the tools work better. I have no interest in doing anything but working smarter, faster with another artist.” This highlights that technology is utilized as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for creative endeavors.
Pixar is recognized as both a film studio and a tech innovator, yet the filmmakers reiterated that the essence of their work remains rooted in human creativity. Co-director Kenna Harris noted that despite rapid technological advancements, the storytelling and animation process for Toy Story 5 adhered to traditional methods.
She remarked, “Pixar is a technology company first, and so things are changing. Pixar is figuring out how to change along with it. But as far as our process on ‘Toy Story 5’ went, we had to figure it out ourselves, mainly because ultimately, what you’re seeing on screen is the work of a lot of awesome artists.”
The filmmakers aimed to directly address the increasing public discourse surrounding AI in animation and entertainment. Instead of shying away from the topic, they openly clarified that the film’s visuals, characters, and performances stem from artists working within the traditional Pixar framework.
Stanton further explained that while Pixar employs advanced software, the focus has always been on enhancing tools for artists rather than replacing them. He stressed that the aim is to foster collaboration between technology and creativity, not automate storytelling.
The discussion arises at a time when numerous studios are exploring AI-generated content, particularly in animation, visual effects, and script development. Pixar’s statements position Toy Story 5 as a project firmly anchored in human-driven filmmaking, even while utilizing modern digital tools behind the scenes.
The film continues the adventures of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and their fellow toys as they navigate a new environment where children are increasingly captivated by screens and digital devices. While the narrative delves into technology as a theme, the filmmakers made a distinct separation between the film’s subject matter and its production process.
According to the preview, the story introduces new characters and contemporary toys, including a tablet-like device named Lilypad, reflecting the evolution of playtime for kids. However, the creators emphasized that the film’s emotional core is rooted in human experiences, relationships, and imagination.
Randy Newman returns to compose the score, continuing his long-standing association with the franchise. The production team highlighted that every aspect of the film, from animation to sound, was developed through collaboration among artists, animators, writers, and musicians.
In summary, the filmmakers used the press preview not only to unveil story details but also to clarify their creative process. Toy Story 5 may explore a world influenced by technology, but the creators insist that the film itself is a fully human creation, crafted by artists working collaboratively rather than machines.
