Pixar has officially revealed its upcoming original animated film, Gatto, set in a stylized version of Venice, Italy, where cats govern their own hidden society. Announced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, the film is slated for theatrical release on March 5, 2027.

Gatto marks Pixar’s 32nd animated feature and is directed by Enrico Casarosa, renowned for his work on Luca. The film is produced by Andrea Warren, continuing their creative collaboration from that earlier Pixar project.

The narrative centers on a black cat named Nero, who finds himself entangled in the perilous realm of a feline crime syndicate. Indebted to a formidable mob boss, Nero is thrust into a challenging predicament that leads him to forge an unexpected friendship and embark on a quest for meaning in his life.

Having spent years navigating the canals and streets of Venice, a city steeped in superstition and intrigue, Nero begins to reevaluate his choices and question whether he has been living the right life. His circumstances become increasingly complex when he becomes linked to Rocco, a feared mob boss who wields control over parts of the city’s underground.

The film boasts a talented voice cast led by Mark Ruffalo as Nero and Laurence Fishburne as Rocco. Additional cast members include Ismail Elsene, with more roles yet to be confirmed.

Pixar describes the film as featuring a “living painting” visual style, merging hand-painted 2D textures with modern computer-generated animation. This innovative approach aims to provide a distinctive visual identity compared to previous Pixar releases, blending traditional artistry with digital techniques.

In early footage showcased in the teaser, viewers see Nero and Rocco in a comedic interrogation scene that emphasizes the contrast between the two characters. The teaser also offers a glimpse into the film’s tone, which intertwines humor, tension, and emotional storytelling.

According to Pixar’s official synopsis, Nero’s journey is a quest for purpose while navigating loyalty and survival in a city that may not always be in his favor. His relationship with Rocco is central to the story, influencing his decisions and future.

Originally scheduled for June 2027, the release of Gatto has been moved up to March 5, 2027, to avoid direct competition with other major animated films set for the same summer window.

Pixar’s announcement positions Gatto as another original concept in its extensive filmography, following beloved titles like Toy Story, Up, Inside Out, and Coco. The studio continues to prioritize new storytelling ideas alongside its established franchises.

With its unique Venice setting, animal-led cast, and crime-themed storyline, Gatto represents a fresh direction in tone and style while maintaining Pixar’s commitment to character-driven narratives and emotional themes.

The film is set to be released exclusively in cinemas worldwide in March 2027, with the teaser already providing audiences their first look into its unusual and visually captivating world.
