‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan‘ delivered one of the most pivotal episodes of its final season this week. Episode 4, titled “Pawns and Rooks,” makes the chess metaphor in its title unmistakable. Although Kanan and Raq do not confront each other directly in this episode, their forces are clearly at odds, hinting that a significant clash is imminent.

Kanan is strategically attacking Raq and Flossy’s new network from various angles. A major reveal in this episode is the identity of the escort Kanan has been getting close to; she is revealed to be a young Jarita, who will eventually become Shawn’s mother, a familiar face for longtime fans of the Power franchise.

We gain insight into her life, including her special needs brother and her grandmother’s struggles with rehab. Despite holding a bachelor’s degree in psychology, her circumstances have led her down a drastically different path.

Kanan exploits this relationship to devastating effect, kidnapping one of Flossy’s escorts and coercing her to swap the drugs she was meant to deliver with a deadly batch. The recipient of the tainted drugs turns out to be a federal judge, who succumbs to an overdose. Flossy is enraged, and Raq’s new partnership suffers a serious blow before it can even establish itself.

Meanwhile, Raq and Marvin attempt to eliminate Stefano by hiring the Memphis crew, but one of the three hitmen betrays them. Stefano survives and is now aware of Raq’s plans, putting her in a precarious position that she cannot easily navigate. Her business is compromised on one front, and her life is at risk on another.

Taz’s storyline reaches its inevitable conclusion in this episode. Kanan discovers that Taz was never short on the count and realizes that Breeze had been testing him all along. The confrontation culminates in Kanan shooting and killing Taz, after which Breeze teaches Kanan how to properly dispose of a body, another lesson in the ruthless life that awaits him.

In another subplot, Jukebox finds herself short on the bribe money owed to corrupt officer Garcia, who makes it clear that there will be repercussions. Marvin has a meaningful conversation with a pastor about Lou-Lou’s fate and whether someone like him could find redemption, showcasing genuine character growth in a figure previously defined by violence.

The episode’s biggest twist comes at the end when Breeze reveals to Kanan that they are blood brothers, both sons of DefCon. Whether this is the truth or a clever manipulation remains a central question as we head into episode 5. Breeze may genuinely believe this connection, or he may be tightening his grip on Kanan by instilling a sense of familial loyalty that makes betrayal unthinkable.

Episode 5 of ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ is set to air on July 10 at 8 p.m. ET on Starz. Next week’s preview hints at Stefano sending Kanan after Raq once more, suggesting that the impending mother-and-son confrontation is about to escalate to an irreversible level.
