Prime Video has made the surprising decision to cancel ‘It’s Not Like That’ after just one season, leaving many fans in disbelief. The series garnered strong critical acclaim, achieving a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, and successfully built a dedicated audience during its time on the streaming service.

According to Deadline, the faith-based drama will not be returning for a second season. This cancellation is unexpected, especially considering the show’s solid performance on streaming charts and its growing popularity after reaching a broader Prime Video audience.

‘It’s Not Like That’ follows Malcolm, portrayed by Scott Foley, a minister and father of three striving to rebuild his life following the loss of his wife. The narrative also centers on Lori, played by Erinn Hayes, a divorced mother of two teenagers. As both characters navigate the challenges of single parenthood, they develop a close bond while figuring out their futures.

The cancellation is particularly surprising given the show’s strong streaming rankings. While Prime Video does not frequently disclose detailed viewership statistics, it began releasing weekly global Top 10 rankings in June. ‘It’s Not Like That’ reached No. 9 on the global chart and continued to attract attention, even climbing to fifth place on the U.S. streaming chart by July 7, maintaining a spot in the U.S. Top 10 for 51 consecutive days.

The show’s impressive performance coincided with a period of growth for Wonder Project, the production company behind the series. Prime Video and Wonder Project previously collaborated on ‘House of David’, which has received two seasons, with a third season reportedly in the works. However, both ‘It’s Not Like That’ and ‘House of David’ were initially greenlit under different leadership at Prime Video.

Created by Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson, who also served as showrunners alongside Garrett Lerner, the cast featured J.R. Ramirez as Lori’s ex-husband David, along with Caleb Baumann, Cary Christopher, Leven Miranda, Liv Lindell, and Cassidy Paul.

The cancellation leaves several storylines unresolved. The season finale concluded with Malcolm privately confessing his feelings for Lori, while Lori was faced with a decision about her future with either her new boyfriend or her ex-husband. Without a second season, viewers are left wondering if Malcolm will ever express his feelings, what choice Lori will make, and how their families will move forward.

Fans are understandably disappointed by the abrupt ending, especially given the show’s widespread acclaim from critics. While Prime Video continues to support major hits like ‘The Boys’, ‘Reacher’, and ‘Invincible’, several other original series have also faced cancellation after just one season, including ‘Countdown’, ‘The Runarounds’, ‘Butterfly’, ‘Cruel Intentions’, and ‘My Lady Jane’.

For now, ‘It’s Not Like That’ remains available for streaming on Prime Video, but fans hoping for a continuation of Malcolm and Lori’s journey will have to imagine how their unfinished story could have unfolded.
