Marvel Television’s ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ is capturing attention not only for its primary villain but also for a concealed comic book character that many viewers overlooked during their initial viewing.

The special centers on Frank Castle, portrayed by Jon Bernthal, as he relentlessly pursues a violent vendetta against the Gnucci crime family. The main antagonist is Ma Gnucci, played by Judith Light, who rules her criminal empire with ruthless control. Her narrative serves as the core conflict of the special, culminating in a bloody confrontation in the final act.

However, director Reinaldo Marcus Green revealed that there is an additional layer that many fans missed. In an interview with The Mary Sue, he confirmed that another significant villain from the Punisher comics was subtly woven into the storyline. This character is Barracuda, played by Jamall Johnson, who is credited simply as “Barry.”

Initially, most viewers assumed Barry was merely a minor supporting character linked to the Gnucci family, as the credits did not provide further clarity. However, Johnson later took to social media to confirm that he was indeed portraying Barracuda from the comics, prompting fans to revisit his scenes with fresh eyes.

Green explained that the creative team aimed to honor the original comics while keeping the narrative engaging for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He stated, “We want to pay homage to the comics. But, also make our own thing. And, hopefully the special stands alone in it. In its own way! The Ma Gnucci character was just so much fun. And, obviously hopefully a wink to Barracuda and whatever can come from that in the future of the MCU.”

In the comics, Barracuda is one of the Punisher’s most formidable foes. He made his debut in ‘Punisher MAX’ #31, written by Garth Ennis. Barracuda, a former special forces soldier turned mercenary, is known for his immense strength, combat skills, and utter ruthlessness. Unlike many villains, he possesses a dark sense of humor and lacks moral boundaries, making him both unpredictable and terrifying.

Barracuda is not just another henchman; he is one of the few characters capable of physically matching Frank Castle in battle. He also inflicts serious emotional and psychological damage on Frank, pushing him toward darker and more brutal choices. Their confrontations are among the most violent narratives in Punisher lore.

Director Green’s remarks imply that Barracuda’s inclusion in the special was intentional. He hinted that Marvel Television might be laying the groundwork for future storylines involving the character within the MCU. He referred to it as a “wink” to fans, suggesting potential growth for Barracuda’s role.

This makes Barracuda’s discreet introduction more significant than it initially appeared. Rather than being announced as a major villain, he was cleverly concealed under a simple name change. This decision aligns with Marvel’s tradition of embedding long-term story hints within subtle details for dedicated fans to uncover.

The introduction of Barracuda also broadens the darker street-level universe surrounding Frank Castle. While Ma Gnucci drives the primary narrative of the special, Barracuda symbolizes a larger potential for the future. His comic book background indicates he could evolve into one of the Punisher’s most dangerous long-term adversaries if Marvel continues to utilize him.

The character is now officially part of the live-action Punisher saga. It remains uncertain how Marvel Television will incorporate him next, but his introduction clearly sets the stage for more conflicts in Frank Castle’s world.
