‘Reacher’ Season 4, Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Reacher Becomes the Target
Jack Reacher has always had a knack for stepping into chaotic situations and emerging unscathed, but ‘Reacher’ Season 4 is steadily unraveling that image. What began as a chance encounter on a Philadelphia subway has escalated into a web of conspiracy involving stolen government files, hired assassins, and a congressman hiding dark secrets.
This season adapts Lee Child’s novel ‘Gone Tomorrow,’ using its initial episodes to intricately link Anna Merrick’s death to a missing flash drive that everyone seems desperate to obtain. By the conclusion of Episode 4, “Karambits and Pieces,” two key characters, Lila Hoth and Amisha Hoth, were revealed to be far more dangerous than initially perceived, setting the stage for a confrontation that unfolds in Episode 5, “Bridge.”
The episode kicks off with revelations about Anna. It discloses that she was being blackmailed into surrendering a stolen government file in exchange for her kidnapped son, Ben. Tragically, she took her own life on the subway after discovering Ben was already dead and realizing that Reacher had inadvertently sabotaged her only chance to save him.
The emotional impact intensifies when Ben’s body is discovered, murdered with the same distinctive karambit knife linked to Lila and Amisha. When Reacher rushes to their hotel, expecting to rescue them from armed assailants, he instead finds that the two women have already dispatched their attackers in a gruesome manner. This scene starkly confirms that Lila and Amisha are not mere victims but rather formidable players in this deadly game.
This bloody hotel incident marks the beginning of Reacher’s new dilemma. The police interpret the scene as a massacre with Reacher at its center, and instead of being seen as a witness or ally, he is branded a suspect. This shift transforms him into Philadelphia’s most wanted man for the remainder of the episode, limiting his freedom and forcing him deeper into hiding.

With Reacher now effectively sidelined, the episode shifts focus to his support network. Characters like Tamara Green, Jacob Merrick, and Russell Plum, who were previously secondary, find themselves thrust into danger as they become embroiled in their own firefight. For Jacob, a small-town cop with limited experience, this confrontation offers him a chance to avenge his sister Anna’s death, a storyline that has been simmering since the season began.
However, the most pressing question remains unanswered: what exactly is on Anna’s flash drive, and why are so many factions willing to kill for it? Instead of resolving this mystery, the conclusion of ‘Bridge’ expands the circle of individuals pursuing Reacher, setting the stage for the latter half of the season to explore both the political ramifications tied to Congressman Sampson and the unclear motives of Lila and Amisha Hoth.
Jacob’s quest for vengeance concludes the episode on a note of personal reckoning rather than a tidy resolution to the overarching conspiracy. This aligns with the season’s approach, allowing personal stakes and the broader mystery to escalate simultaneously.
With three episodes remaining before the season finale, ‘Reacher’ has ample opportunity to reveal the contents of that flash drive and the extent of the Hoths’ involvement. New episodes are released weekly on Prime Video, leading up to the finale on September 16.
