A fresh supernatural love story is set to unite two well-known faces from film and television. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rudy Pankow are cast in ‘Thud’, an upcoming romantic fantasy film that promises a unique twist on the traditional love story.

As reported by Deadline, Gellar and Pankow will portray the Grim Reaper and the Devil, respectively. The film will be directed by Mali Elfman, known for her work on the genre film ‘Next Exit’, and is based on an original script by Noga Pnueli.

The narrative follows the Grim Reaper and the Devil as they unexpectedly cross paths at a three-day destination wedding. Both characters arrive with intentions to stir up trouble, but their encounter leads to unforeseen romantic feelings.

Filming is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, having secured a California tax credit. Producers Derek Bishé and David Grove Churchill Viste will oversee the project, with a talented team of executive producers that includes Lindsay Helms and Joel Nevells from Helmstreet Productions, as well as Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks from Divide/Conquer, alongside Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin from Radio Silence.

This film marks Gellar’s reunion with Radio Silence, the creative team behind ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’. Recently, Gellar has appeared in various projects, including Showtime’s ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ and a cameo in Sony’s reboot of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’.

Additionally, she is set to lend her voice to Blair, a member of a dysfunctional bear family, in the upcoming Tubi animated series ‘Breaking Bear’, which also features Brendan Fraser, Josh Gad, and Annie Murphy.

Rudy Pankow, recognized for his role as JJ Maybank on Netflix’s ‘Outer Banks’, is also expanding his portfolio with several new projects. He recently starred in Universal’s adaptation of ‘Reminders of Him’ alongside Tyriq Withers and Maika Monroe. Pankow has also completed filming for ‘Cowboy’, a modern Western featuring Ben Foster, and will appear in Hulu’s comedy ‘Never Change!’, which debuted at the Tribeca Festival.

Mali Elfman, directing ‘Thud’, brings a wealth of experience in fantasy and horror. Her debut feature film, ‘Next Exit’, premiered at Tribeca before its release by Magnolia Pictures. Recently, she wrote and directed ‘The Scariest Skeleton’ for the animated horror anthology ‘Dark Corners’, which includes contributions from notable creators like Stephen King, Paul Tremblay, and Kate Siegel.

Elfman has also produced projects such as Karen Gillan’s ‘The Party’s Just Beginning’, Mike Flanagan’s ‘Before I Wake’, and ‘Birth/Rebirth’.

Writer Noga Pnueli is celebrated for her dark and unconventional romantic narratives. Her screenplay ‘Meet Cute’ was featured on The Black List and later adapted into a Peacock film starring Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson. Another of her scripts, ‘High Society’, also gained recognition on The Black List and is currently under development.

‘Thud’ is shaping up to blend romance, comedy, fantasy, and supernatural elements into a distinctive tale of two powerful figures discovering unexpected emotions. With a strong cast and an experienced creative team, the film is poised to be one of the more intriguing genre projects in development.

Deadline first reported the casting news and details about the upcoming movie. A release date for ‘Thud’ has not yet been announced.
