Few moments in modern superhero cinema can match the spectacle of seeing numerous beloved characters share the same screen, and Marvel Studios is taking that concept to new heights.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ unites actors from previous MCU projects and 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men’ film series, creating a unique convergence of universes that fans have long theorized about. This ambitious crossover is now a reality, and even those involved are still trying to grasp its magnitude.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film boasts an ensemble cast led by Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, with a release date set for December 18, 2026, as part of Phase Six of the MCU. Legacy ‘X-Men’ actors such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn will reprise their roles as Beast, Professor X, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, and Mystique, respectively, marking an unprecedented scope for a superhero film.

In a recent interview with Collider, Romijn reflected on the experience of filming, particularly on a day when around 35 actors were on set. She recalled, “That was a very surreal day. I’ll never forget it. There were two days back-to-back where we were all just kind of looking at each other, going, ‘This is crazy.’” Her comments convey the raw human experience of being part of something truly historic.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige provided further insight into the production’s scale, noting that there are typically between 30 and 35 actors on set simultaneously, highlighting the vast number of heroes involved. To manage this complexity, the Russo Brothers have returned to a strategy they employed on ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’, utilizing baseball cards with magnets to track the multitude of characters.

For Romijn, returning to the role of Mystique, which she first portrayed in 2000, carried significant emotional weight. She expressed that she approached the character with “full ownership” this time, having previously dealt with imposter syndrome during her earlier portrayals.

She also mentioned experiencing “crazy dreams” throughout the shoot, describing them as regressive, as her mind worked to process the return to a character she hadn’t played in years.

Balancing her role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ with her ongoing work on ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’, Romijn described the dual commitment as “surreal and overwhelming,” expressing gratitude that both productions could accommodate her schedule, which involved significant travel between sets.

As ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaches its December 2026 release, excitement is sure to build. Share your thoughts in the comments about what you’re most eager to see when this massive ensemble finally assembles on screen.
