It looks like the future of the Rebel Moon film series is uncertain. Despite big plans for a long, epic saga, the chances of seeing a third movie are slim. According to screenwriter Kurt Johnstad, getting a third film might take “an act of God.”

Rebel Moon was supposed to be a six-part space opera, directed by Zack Snyder and released on Netflix. The second installment, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, was meant to continue the story, but things haven’t gone as planned.

When the first film, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, premiered, it did well in viewership. However, the sequel struggled to keep that momentum. While The Scargiver did briefly hit the top spot on Netflix’s film chart, interest quickly faded. Critics didn’t help either, giving it harsh reviews.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a low 16% positive rating, with an average score of just 3.8/10.

Netflix invested a lot in the Rebel Moon series. The first two movies were produced simultaneously, with a combined budget of $166 million. But with the second film’s lackluster performance, Netflix might be reconsidering the series’ future.

During an appearance on the I MINUTEMEN podcast, Kurt Johnstad, who wrote both films, gave an honest take on the situation. He revealed that there were detailed plans for not just a third movie but also for parts four, five, and six.

Johnstad explained, “We outlined movies 3, 4, 5, and 6… very detailed outlines, and Zack has literally plotted out the whole world. We know where we can go… we’ve written… detailed outlines…The second movie was to find the princess. And the third movie is to make sure that the princess is where she should be — sitting on the throne and properly ruling… over the Mother World.”

However, when asked directly about the chances of a third movie, Johnstad said, “With some luck and an act of God, we’ll get to go back to that world.” This statement highlights just how uncertain the future of the series really is.

For now, it seems that both Johnstad and Snyder are shifting their focus. The pair are currently working on a new project for Netflix, a gritty LAPD thriller. Unlike the big-budget Rebel Moon movies, this new film will be much smaller in scale, without the elaborate sci-fi elements.

While fans of the series may still hold out hope, the reality is that a third Rebel Moon film is unlikely at this point. The disappointing performance of The Scargiver has made it hard to justify the continuation of the series.

For now, Snyder and Johnstad are moving on to other projects, but they haven’t completely ruled out the possibility of returning to the Rebel Moon universe someday, if fortune, and maybe a miracle, allows it.
