Record-Breaking Launch for ‘Subnautica 2’ as Player Numbers Soar
‘Subnautica 2’ has officially launched into Early Access and is already demonstrating impressive numbers right from the start.
The game quickly attracted a massive wave of players on Steam, achieving a peak of 467,582 concurrent users shortly after its release on March 14. This early surge highlights the significant interest surrounding the sequel.
This information comes from official updates shared by ‘Subnautica’s’ social media accounts and player data tracked on Steam. According to these updates, ‘Subnautica 2’ has already sold over 1 million copies across all platforms, including PC and Xbox Series X/S. Shortly thereafter, developer Unknown Worlds announced that the game surpassed 2 million sales within just 12 hours of launch. The game is also available through Game Pass, although exact player numbers from that service have not been disclosed.

To grasp the significance of this jump, it’s helpful to compare it to the original ‘Subnautica.’ The first game peaked at just over 51,000 concurrent players on Steam, while its follow-up, ‘Subnautica: Below Zero,’ reached around 42,000 players. This means ‘Subnautica 2’ has already far exceeded the earlier entries in terms of early player engagement.
The game is also performing well compared to other survival titles. Games like ‘Rust’ peaked at 262,284 concurrent players on Steam, while newer survival games such as ‘Windrose’ hit around 222,134. Another recent title, ‘Dune: Awakening,’ also had a strong launch, but ‘Subnautica 2’ has managed to stand out in this competitive landscape.
This strong launch is crucial for Unknown Worlds and its publisher Krafton. The publisher has reportedly linked a bonus system to the game’s performance, which has been part of earlier discussions and disputes within the company. This makes the early success even more significant for the studio.
With such a robust start, ‘Subnautica 2’ now enters its Early Access phase with considerable attention. The big question remains whether it can maintain this level of interest as more updates and content are rolled out.
