Regal Introduces ‘Resident Evil’ Organ Transplant Popcorn Bag for Theatrical Release
Movie theaters have increasingly embraced elaborate popcorn buckets as a marketing strategy, creating a unique niche in internet culture. Studios have become more inventive with these promotional items, often generating more excitement online than the actual trailers.
Zach Cregger’s upcoming reimagining of the iconic horror series has already sparked significant anticipation ahead of its theatrical debut, largely due to the director’s rising acclaim following ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons.’ With tickets now available for the film’s September 18 release, Regal has revealed its own quirky contribution to the promotional campaign, perfectly matching the dark humor fans expect from Cregger’s work.
Instead of a conventional popcorn bucket, Regal is offering moviegoers the “Organ Transplant Popcorn Bag” when they attend ‘Resident Evil’ in theaters. This green medical-style cooler bag is filled with a large popcorn, and notably, the heart is not included, adding a fitting touch of dark humor in line with the film’s storyline.
This organ delivery theme aligns directly with the movie’s central narrative. ‘Resident Evil’ follows Bryan, portrayed by Austin Abrams, a medical courier tasked with delivering a transplant organ to Raccoon City General Hospital on a chaotic snowy night that quickly devolves into a fight for survival amidst an outbreak.
Unlike previous ‘Resident Evil’ adaptations that focused on ensemble casts featuring established video game characters, Cregger’s version intentionally deviates from that approach. The story centers solely on Bryan, set during an alternate version of the events from ‘Resident Evil 2,’ without involving any of the franchise’s iconic characters.
The supporting cast includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson, who portray various Umbrella Corporation scientists and enforcers that encounter Bryan throughout his increasingly nightmarish evening. Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, aiming to remain true to the franchise’s established lore while crafting an entirely original story within that universe.
Early advance screenings have already created positive buzz, with attendees noting the film’s opening as fast-paced and consistent with Cregger’s unique blend of horror and dark comedy. This combination of genuine scares and self-aware humor seems to extend into the film’s marketing, with the Organ Transplant Popcorn Bag perfectly encapsulating that tone.
In addition to the standard theatrical release, ‘Resident Evil’ is receiving a premium rollout, with new posters confirming IMAX, ScreenX, and 4DX formats available for the film’s opening weekend. This expansive release strategy indicates strong confidence from Sony and Constantin Film in the film’s potential box office success.
For a franchise that has faced challenges in its transition from video game to film, Cregger’s reinvention appears to be generating the kind of online buzz that studios hope for ahead of a major release, even if some of that excitement is currently focused on the novelty of the popcorn bag rather than the trailer itself.
With tickets already on sale and the film’s September 18 release date fast approaching, fans eager to see how Cregger’s vision measures up against the franchise’s legacy won’t have to wait much longer, popcorn bag in hand.
