‘Resident Evil’ Director Zach Cregger Shares His Lifelong Passion for the Games
A fresh look at the upcoming Resident Evil reboot highlights how director Zach Cregger is utilizing his personal experiences with the video games to shape the film.
Cregger, who is both directing and co-writing the film, revealed that he has been a devoted fan of the Resident Evil games for many years. His extensive gameplay experience has significantly influenced his approach to the movie.
Rather than focusing solely on action or elite soldiers, Cregger aims to create a film that resonates with the average player’s experience. He expressed his desire to evoke feelings of tension, confusion, and fear throughout the story.
He shared his personal connection to the games, stating, “I have played the games countless times.”
Cregger also discussed the challenges he faced while playing, particularly with aiming and surviving under pressure. This frustration helped him grasp what makes the games intensely engaging for players.
This understanding is reflected in the choice of the main character, who is not a trained soldier or expert fighter. Instead, the narrative follows an ordinary person caught in a deadly outbreak, forced to survive with minimal experience or preparation.
The film centers on a character named Bryan, portrayed by Austin Abrams, who works as a medical courier. His routine job takes a perilous turn when a viral outbreak occurs, thrusting him into a fight for survival. As the situation escalates, he becomes entangled with the Umbrella Corporation and the monstrous creatures spawned by the infection.
Cregger emphasized his goal of capturing the fear and uncertainty that characterize the original games. Rather than crafting a story around heroes who are already adept at handling danger, he wants the audience to experience the terror through the eyes of someone who is completely unprepared.
He clarified that the movie does not follow a single game storyline. Instead, it draws inspiration from the overall tone and feeling of the franchise. The focus is on survival horror, where danger escalates gradually, and the protagonist must adapt quickly or face dire consequences.
Cregger’s approach is designed to maintain high tension throughout the film. He aims for viewers to feel immersed in the game world, where every decision counts and mistakes can be fatal.
This reboot is part of a new initiative to revitalize the Resident Evil franchise in theaters, following previous adaptations that received mixed reviews. This version is being developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
The cast features Austin Abrams as Bryan, alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson in supporting roles. Each character is connected to the outbreak and the experiments conducted by the Umbrella Corporation.
Filming is set to begin in 2025 in Prague, with the movie scheduled for release on September 18.
With this reboot, Cregger aims to deliver a more grounded and intense horror experience that mirrors what players feel when they first enter the Resident Evil universe, especially when they are unprepared for the challenges ahead.
