‘Resident Evil’ Reveals Its Most Disturbing Movie Theater Merchandise Yet
Themed popcorn buckets have carved out a unique niche in movie marketing over recent years, with studios vying to create the most striking and often bizarre collectibles to entice fans into theaters. From sandworms to horror icons, these buckets have transformed into mini-events, generating excitement long before a film’s release.
Zach Cregger’s upcoming reimagining of ‘Resident Evil’ has already sparked anticipation due to its R rating and gruesome tone. The film features Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier caught in an outbreak while delivering to Raccoon City General Hospital. Joining him are Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, with the film set to hit theaters on September 18.
Now, Cinemark has unveiled its version of the film’s popcorn bucket, which is just as unsettling as fans hoped. Rather than a traditional bucket, this collectible resembles a soft-sided medical courier bag designed to mimic an organ-transplant cooler, complete with a shoulder strap and a green, first-aid-branded exterior.
According to Cinemark’s official shop listing, the bag can hold a substantial 200 ounces, with a limit of three units per customer for this limited-edition item. The chain describes it as perfect for your “next cinematic operation or movie marathon,” fully embracing the film’s medical-horror theme.
Cinemark isn’t the only theater chain joining in on the grotesque fun. AMC and Regal have also introduced their own versions of the organ-transplant bag, with Regal notably stating in its promotional materials that the collectible does “not come with a beating heart,” despite images suggesting otherwise.
Regal’s version will be available for purchase starting on release day, while AMC’s rollout begins on September 17, and Cinemark has confirmed that its bucket is already in stores. All three chains are treating this item as an in-theater exclusive, available only while supplies last, without announcing an official price for the collectible.
The design aligns perfectly with the plot of Cregger’s take on the franchise, which shifts from the typical zombie-outbreak narrative to a more focused story centered on Abrams’ character and his fateful delivery. Fans online have noted that the bag’s aesthetic also resembles the “Insert First Aid Kit” box from the ‘Resident Evil’ remake video game, providing longtime players of the Capcom series with an extra layer of nostalgia.
This merchandise is fitting for a director known for transforming familiar horror setups into something far more unsettling than anticipated. After ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons’, Cregger has built a reputation for twisting recognizable premises into deeply uncomfortable experiences, and this popcorn bucket seems to embody that spirit right down to the concession stand.
Whether or not the bag becomes the most talked-about aspect of opening weekend, it has already succeeded in sparking conversations well ahead of the film’s debut. With its shoulder strap, “Keep Cool” warning labels, and distinctly unsettling presentation, Cinemark’s take on the collectible has given fans yet another reason to attend in person rather than wait for streaming.
