Robert Downey Jr. Critiques Modern Celebrity Culture and Influencers
Robert Downey Jr. has expressed strong opinions about influencer culture, sharing them candidly.
The actor, renowned for his role as Iron Man in the Marvel films, appeared on the Conversations for Our Daughters podcast, where he challenged the notion that social media influencers are the future of celebrity.
He was quite direct in his response. When it was suggested that influencers represent the stars of tomorrow, Downey Jr. remarked, “I don’t know what world you’re living into, but I think that that is absolute horse—.”
However, he was careful not to dismiss the entire concept. He recognized that the landscape of fame has genuinely evolved, noting, “Nowadays, people can create celebrity without ever doing much besides rolling a phone on themselves.” He added, “And I don’t look at that as a negative thing. I just look at it as more like the challenge for individuation is being upped.”
Downey Jr. emphasized that the standards for standing out have actually increased. With many vying for attention online, he believes that young individuals who choose a different path will be the ones to make a significant impact. He expressed hope that, “the grosser part of the youth of – let’s just call it America for locality’s sake – you know, is gonna say, ‘Yeah, but that’s not my thing. I want to go do something, I’m going to make something, I want to build something, I want to educate myself and I want to have more inputs, so whatever my output is, it isn’t just a self-aggrandizing kind of influencer-type thing.’”
He also shared a personal anecdote about his 14-year-old son, Exton, who briefly ventured into the influencer realm. Downey Jr. humorously recalled a moment when Exton asked his video game viewers, “Hey, if you like the way I’m playing this video game, do you wanna send me a donation?”
Another notable moment from the conversation was his comparison of today’s influencers to a specific type of figure, stating, “There’s something about the influencers today are almost like the evangelical hucksters of the information age.” He tempered this by acknowledging that it is indeed new territory, and he tries not to judge it too harshly since the future remains uncertain.
When discussing his own social media presence, Downey Jr. was candid about his reluctance to engage. Although people often tell him that his followers enjoy glimpses of his life, he finds the whole idea somewhat superficial. He remarked, “I’d be manufacturing that aspect for them,” adding, “So it’s B-.”
