Robert Downey Jr. Shares Exciting Update on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Robert Downey Jr. is urging Marvel fans to have faith in the team behind ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as production progresses on one of the most eagerly awaited superhero films in recent years.
During his appearance at SXSW London, Downey provided an honest update about the film and the challenge of following two of Marvel’s monumental successes, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. He emphasized that the creative team is not aiming to merely replicate past successes.
Instead, they are tackling the project with a fresh perspective.
Downey stated, “What we’ve been laboring so hard and long over [the past year] is… we can’t beat it and we can’t stand on the shoulders of these two giants of ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ so we’re literally zeroing out the board.”
He continued by saying, “We’re going to try and earn your trust and respect all over again. And with the likes of these fellas, I think we have a pretty good shot.”
Fans welcomed these comments, expressing their curiosity about Marvel’s plans for the next major Avengers narrative. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is anticipated to be one of the largest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking a significant turning point for the franchise.
One of the most surprising aspects of the film is Downey’s return to the MCU. After famously portraying Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, for over a decade, he is set to return in a completely new role. This time, he will take on the character of Doctor Doom, one of Marvel’s most notorious villains.
According to information released by Marvel Studios, the film will unite heroes and teams from various universes. The Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men are all expected to play crucial roles in the story as they come together to face the threat posed by Doctor Doom.
The journey to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has evolved significantly over the past few years. Marvel initially announced ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2022 as the concluding chapters of the Multiverse Saga. Jonathan Majors was slated to return as Kang the Conqueror, with plans for Kang to serve as the saga’s primary antagonist.
However, those plans shifted following Majors’ legal troubles and his exit from Marvel. The studio later opted for a different direction. In July 2024, Marvel officially announced the return of directors Anthony and Joe Russo, along with the surprising casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Concurrently, the film received its new title, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
The movie will boast a large ensemble cast featuring actors from across Marvel’s history, including characters from previous MCU projects and members of the X-Men franchise. The narrative will reportedly center on heroes from different realities uniting as universes begin to collide.
According to the film’s official premise, the events unfold fourteen months after ‘Thunderbolts’. Heroes from Earth-616, the universe of the Fantastic Four, and the realm of the original X-Men will be compelled to join forces to thwart Doctor Doom and prevent a massive threat from spreading across reality.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is currently slated for release in theaters on December 18. The story will continue in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, expected to hit theaters one year later in December 2027.
For now, Downey’s message is clear. The team understands the high expectations and is diligently working to create something that will regain fans’ trust.
