Robert Downey Jr. has finally shared his thoughts on one of the most heated debates among Marvel fans, coinciding perfectly with the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday. The burning question remains: who holds more power, Thanos or Doctor Doom?

This discussion arose during an interview with Joe Russo, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Downey Jr., who is set to portray Doctor Doom in the forthcoming Marvel film, responded playfully when asked to choose between the two iconic villains.

Joe Russo posed the question directly, asking, “who’s more powerful, is it Thanos or Doom?” With a smile, Downey Jr. replied, “Doctor Doom…” before lightheartedly commenting on the microphone setup in the room, keeping the atmosphere fun while providing fans the answer they were eager to hear.

Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was first revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, surprising fans worldwide. After years of embodying Iron Man, he is now stepping into the shoes of Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel’s most formidable and intelligent villains. His introduction is intended to position Doom as the next significant threat in the MCU.

Thanos, portrayed by Josh Brolin, was previously the most powerful force in the franchise, annihilating half the universe and compelling the Avengers to unite across various films. Many fans still regard him as the pinnacle of villains in the MCU. However, Doctor Doom presents a different type of power.

Unlike Thanos, who primarily relied on brute strength and the Infinity Gauntlet, Doctor Doom is characterized in the comics by a blend of genius-level intellect, advanced technology, and potent magic. This unique combination makes him unpredictable and adaptable in combat.

Doom’s greatest advantage over Thanos may lie in his ability to wield both technology and mystical forces simultaneously. While Thanos often charges headfirst into battles, Doom is more inclined to strategize, manipulate circumstances, and strike when his opponent is most vulnerable.

In a hypothetical battle between the two, Doom could potentially outmaneuver Thanos by avoiding direct confrontation initially. By leveraging his intelligence, he could analyze Thanos’s strengths and weaknesses, then utilize advanced technology or magical artifacts to counter the Infinity Stones. In various comic iterations, Doom has even managed to seize or neutralize cosmic-level powers by rewriting reality or tricking his adversaries into losing control.

Doom’s armor also offers protection that rivals some of Marvel’s mightiest characters, while his mastery of sorcery adds another dimension that Thanos does not inherently possess. This makes him a threat that is not only physical but also strategic and magical.

The Russo brothers, directing Avengers: Doomsday, have hinted at a new phase for the MCU. As Joe Russo elaborated in the same interview, “We are back to phase zero… we’re starting over from scratch.” The aim is to present Doom as a fresh type of threat without heavily relying on previous narratives.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, and with Downey Jr. officially taking on the role of Doctor Doom, Marvel fans are anticipating a groundbreaking villain showdown that could redefine the concept of power within the MCU.
