James Gunn’s DC Universe continues to expand, yet one iconic hero remains absent. While Superman, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and the Lanterns are either on screen or in the pipeline, the identity of the Dark Knight is still a mystery. Fans have long speculated about who will don the cowl.

The next significant installment for the franchise is ‘Man of Tomorrow‘, the sequel to 2025’s ‘Superman’. Written and directed by Gunn, this film marks the 4th entry in the DCU and is slated for release on July 9, 2027, with filming scheduled from April to August 2026. David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman, Nicholas Hoult returns as Lex Luthor, and Lars Eidinger portrays the villain Brainiac.

A new rumor suggests that the question of Batman might finally be addressed in this film. According to the claim, the actor portraying the DCU’s Batman could be unveiled in ‘Man of Tomorrow’, with Bruce Wayne making an appearance towards the end of the film or in a post-credits scene. This reveal would reportedly set the stage for ‘The Brave and the Bold‘. However, Gunn has not confirmed any casting details, so this information should be treated as speculative.

‘The Brave and the Bold’ was announced in 2023 as part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. This film is expected to feature Bruce Wayne’s Batman alongside his son Damian Wayne as Robin, a young assassin who learns about his father later in life. Although Gunn has indicated that the script ideas have evolved since the announcement, that lineup remains the anticipated one.

Andy Muschietti, known for directing ‘It’ and ‘The Flash’, is set to helm this project, and Gunn has confirmed that it is not on hold. However, there is currently no release date or cast information, with Gunn mentioning that the screenplay was not finalized at the time. Muschietti has also indicated that Batman’s development was slightly delayed as he focused on a science fiction project.

If the rumor holds true, it would mean an earlier reveal of the DCU’s Batman than many anticipated. Some industry insiders have suggested that ‘The Brave and the Bold’ may be further along in development than it appears, with reports hinting at a possible production start as soon as late 2027. However, these claims remain unverified.

This speculation contradicts Gunn’s previous statements. Just months ago, he dismissed rumors of Batman auditions for ‘Man of Tomorrow’ as false, emphasizing that the most significant casting news had been Brainiac, with most other notable roles going to characters audiences are already familiar with. In earlier interviews, he expressed his love for Batman but stated that the actor for the DCU’s version had not yet been found.

Any potential Batman reveal would also need to coexist with Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II’, which is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. Gunn has expressed a desire to ensure that casting or development news for the DCU’s Batman does not overshadow Reeves’ film. A reveal in July 2027 would come just months before that sequel, and ComicBook.com has suggested it could create pressure on the Reeves film or prompt the DCU to move forward regardless.

There has also been speculation about Gunn considering an older version of Bruce Wayne, possibly in his 50s, which would align with a hero who has a son old enough to fight alongside him. Fan casting discussions have been active, with names like Alan Ritchson surfacing in online speculation. However, none of this has been confirmed.

Meanwhile, the DC Universe is bustling with activity. ‘Clayface’ is set to premiere on October 23, 2026, and the ‘Lanterns’ series is already airing. ‘Man of Tomorrow’ will also feature Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Matthew Lillard in an undisclosed role, and Frank Grillo, with Aaron Pierre and Xolo Maridueña among the cast.

This film has a lot to deliver, and the addition of a Batman tease would only heighten the expectations on Gunn to craft a compelling narrative while paving the way for future projects. For now, the most prudent assumption is that no decisions are finalized until DC Studios makes an official announcement.
