Ryan Gosling’s MCU Debut as Ghost Rider Expected Before 2028 Solo Movie
For years, ‘Ghost Rider’ has been one of Marvel’s most eagerly anticipated characters, with fans passionately discussing potential casting choices in various forums. From Comic-Con wishlists to endless speculation about which iteration of Johnny Blaze might finally join the MCU, the Spirit of Vengeance has become a running joke among fans regarding Marvel’s unfulfilled promises.
This narrative shifted dramatically at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced Ryan Gosling as the official Ghost Rider. The actor is set to star in his own standalone film in 2028, directed by Shawn Levy, putting an end to years of speculation and a rumor mill that had previously included names like Norman Reedus before settling on Gosling.
Now, attention is turning to the possibility that Gosling’s introduction as Ghost Rider could occur even sooner than his solo film. New reports suggest he may appear as Ghost Rider in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ portraying the Johnny Blaze version of the character, according to insider Jeff Sneider. This timing would mean Gosling’s live-action debut as the flaming-skulled antihero could happen well before his dedicated movie.
This wouldn’t be the first instance of Ghost Rider being linked to an Avengers crossover prior to a solo film. Sneider previously mentioned on The Hot Mic podcast that Marvel was actively casting the role for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ specifically looking for a fresh take on the character instead of reviving Nicolas Cage’s earlier portrayal from the 2007 and 2011 films.
That earlier casting search ultimately led to Gosling’s confirmation, but questions remain about which film will mark his first appearance. As of Comic-Con, Ghost Rider was not officially listed as part of the confirmed cast for either ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ leaving plenty of room for Marvel to keep his involvement under wraps until closer to release.
The scheduling timeline is intriguing. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is slated for release on December 18, 2026, with ‘Secret Wars’ following about a year later on December 17, 2027. This gives Marvel a full year between the two crossover events. Gosling’s own ‘Ghost Rider’ solo film is expected to arrive sometime in 2028, meaning a cameo in ‘Secret Wars’ would serve as his proper introduction to audiences well ahead of his own storyline.
Feige has also indicated that the character’s origins trace back to Gosling himself rather than being a top-down studio decision. The Marvel head has stated that Gosling was the one who envisioned bringing Ghost Rider into the MCU, providing context for why the actor has campaigned for this role for years.
‘Secret Wars’ is also significant as it is positioned as a soft reset for the franchise, with Marvel’s theatrical slate leading up to 2028 limited to just ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ and ‘Secret Wars’ before Gosling’s solo film and ‘Black Panther 3’ arrive. This scarcity of releases makes any confirmed or rumored cameo particularly noteworthy, as ‘Secret Wars’ is shaping up to be the last major theatrical event before the MCU’s next phase begins.
Whether Gosling’s Ghost Rider will indeed appear in ‘Secret Wars’ remains unconfirmed by Marvel, but the timing aligns well enough for fans to anticipate an official announcement. For a character that has been promised and delayed so many times, even a rumor this specific is enough to reignite excitement among the fandom.
