San Diego Comic Con is a haven for cosplayers every year, and Deadpool outfits are among the most popular. With the iconic red suits, katanas, and a plethora of fourth-wall-breaking quips, spotting another Wade Wilson in the crowd rarely raises eyebrows.

This year, however, the bit worked exceptionally well. During Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel for ‘Avengers Doomsday’, a figure in a grey and black Deadpool costume began making noise from the audience, leaving many unsure of who was actually behind the mask.

That uncertainty was the crux of the performance. Ryan Reynolds had seamlessly blended into the crowd wearing a comic-accurate grey and black version of Deadpool’s costume, crafted entirely from denim and never before seen in live action. He stayed in character long enough that those around him genuinely did not recognize him until he began to speak.

Fully committed to the act, Reynolds introduced himself to the panel as “Ricky,” claiming he was just “cosplaying hard” and that he had opted not to wear the Doom mask over his own to avoid ruining his “Canadian tuxedo.” The joke resonated perfectly with an audience that had just spent an hour watching cast reveals for one of Marvel’s most anticipated films.

When Robert Downey Jr., who was on stage as Doctor Doom, pointed out the figure and asked who the sword-wielding person was, the bit escalated. Reynolds remained in character, even questioning Paul Rudd about Thor’s whereabouts and why the character had been seen crying in earlier footage.

Only after the exchange did Reynolds reveal his identity, later sharing a close-up image of himself in the suit without the mask on social media. The grey and black color scheme is a deep cut for longtime fans, harking back to Deadpool’s time with the X-Force in the comics, where the team opted for darker uniforms to enhance stealth.

This detail alone ignited a frenzy of speculation among fans. The suit’s construction from dark and grey denim, along with a small Canadian flag stitched onto the chest, turned the costume into a layered joke that embraced both comic accuracy and Reynolds’ nationality.

Whether this specific costume will appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ remains unconfirmed, and Marvel did not officially announce Reynolds’ involvement in the film during the panel. However, reports suggest that Deadpool will play a role in the story, although the extent of that involvement is still under wraps ahead of the film’s release.

For an actor who has built a career on blurring the lines between himself and his iconic character, sneaking through a convention crowd unnoticed before hijacking a major panel feels like the ultimate Deadpool moment. It’s the kind of stunt that transforms a simple cameo tease into one of the most talked-about highlights of the weekend.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18, and if this stunt is any indication, fans can expect plenty more surprises leading up to the release.
