Sandra Bullock has long been known for her private nature, shying away from the online spotlight that many celebrities embrace. Her absence from social media became a notable characteristic, one she often highlighted when her name was mentioned in contexts where she had not posted.

Thus, her unexpected debut on Instagram this past April caught many by surprise. Fans quickly speculated that her account was created solely to promote her upcoming role in ‘Practical Magic 2,’ alongside her longtime collaborator Nicole Kidman.

However, during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Bullock clarified that her primary reason for joining Instagram was to combat scammers misusing her name and image to defraud fans, rather than just to promote ‘Practical Magic 2.’ She revealed that her decision stemmed from a situation that had been developing for about a year and a half, well before the sequel hype began.

“About a year and a half ago, I had to [join social media] because there were people that were using my name and likeness to scam money out of people,” Bullock shared on the podcast. She recounted the distress it caused her family, particularly her sister, who received messages from strangers claiming, “Your sister took thousands of dollars from me.”

The issue escalated to a point where Bullock felt she needed to take action herself. “The harm that it was causing, families going ‘We don’t know how to tell this person it’s fake,’ and I would have people call them saying ‘It’s fake, it’s not real,’” she explained, illustrating the widespread impersonation that extended beyond financial fraud.

Previously, Bullock had issued a statement addressing the scam issue, warning fans that any accounts pretending to be her or associated with her were fraudulent and aimed at exploiting people. Her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, also fell victim to similar impersonation attempts, highlighting the broader nature of the problem.

Even with her official Instagram presence now established, Bullock admits that the scams persist. “I had no intention of ever going on social media. It was never my calling. And then once I did that, it stopped a little bit, but it doesn’t really. It’s just never-ending,” she noted, reflecting on the ongoing challenges of impersonation.

Bullock’s inaugural Instagram post cleverly tied into the ‘Practical Magic 2’ theme, featuring a short, mystical clip of her pointing at a blender that activates as if by magic, captioned “Midnight somewhere…” Since then, she has engaged with co-stars, commenting on posts from Channing Tatum, Nicole Kidman, and Joey King as the promotional campaign for the sequel gains momentum.

‘Practical Magic 2’ marks the reunion of Bullock and Kidman as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, over two decades after the original film released in 1998. Anticipation for the sequel has surged since the first-look images emerged this summer. Regardless of the reasons that led Bullock to join Instagram, her account now serves a dual purpose: promoting the film and ensuring fans know who the real Sandra Bullock is behind the verified blue checkmark.
