Reunions between former co-stars are always a highlight at major awards shows, especially when the show in question has made a significant impact on pop culture. Fans eagerly anticipate these moments, hoping to see a glimpse of the chemistry that once captivated audiences.

This year’s Emmy ceremony provided just that, featuring two actors whose on-screen romance defined a generation of television for nearly a decade. Their appearance marked the first public reunion in nine years, coinciding with a significant anniversary for the show that launched their careers.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz took the stage to present the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, which was awarded to Matthew Rhys for ‘The Beast in Me.’ Before announcing the nominees, the duo reflected on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ noting that this year marks approximately thirty years since the show first premiered in 1997.

Boreanaz humorously recounted the show’s premise, stating, “When you think about it, it is kind of crazy, right? A teenage girl chosen by fate to fight vampires, demons, the forces of darkness, and then she falls in love with a vampire with a soul, carrying around a couple 100 years of regret,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Boreanaz then leaned into the beloved “Bangel” romance between their characters. “You know, Sarah, I always thought that Buffy and Angel would end up together,” he said, prompting Gellar to respond, “Well, I guess we won’t find out!” This line elicited a delayed reaction of laughter and applause from the audience.

The joke carried deeper significance, as Gellar was previously attached to reprise her role in a planned reboot titled ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,’ which was in development at Hulu before being abruptly cancelled earlier this year. Since then, no further plans for the franchise have been announced.

In addition to the humor, Gellar and Boreanaz took a moment to acknowledge the challenges faced by the show’s extended cast and crew. “David and I would like to acknowledge that it has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew, and we feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people,” Gellar stated, without naming specific individuals.

This tribute referenced the recent losses of three former castmates. Michelle Trachtenberg, who portrayed Buffy’s sister Dawn Summers, passed away in February 2025 at age 39, while Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died in March 2026 at age 54, and Anthony Head, who portrayed Rupert Giles, died in June 2026 at age 72.

‘Buffy’ aired for seven seasons starting in 1997, with Boreanaz’s Angel appearing throughout the first three seasons before starring in his own series, ‘Angel,’ which ran from 1999 to 2004. The original show received fourteen Primetime Emmy nominations, winning twice in 1998 for makeup and music composition.

For dedicated fans still hoping for more ‘Buffy’ content, the reunion offered a bittersweet blend of nostalgia and closure.
