Sauron Returns in ‘The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power’ Season 3 with a New Look
Prime Video’s return to Middle-earth is always a significant event, and with each new season, the marketing strategy has embraced a cinematic flair. With record-breaking budgets and expansive ensemble casts, few fantasy series generate the level of excitement that this franchise does with every new installment.
Anticipation has been steadily rising since Season 2 concluded, as fans are eager for any clues about the story’s direction following one of the most pivotal finales in the series. Sauron ended that season at the peak of his power, and the suspense surrounding what comes next has only intensified in the months that followed.
Empire Magazine has now provided fans with their most striking glimpse yet at the upcoming chapter. The publication has officially unveiled the first look image of Sauron, portrayed by Charlie Vickers, for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3, along with new concept art from artist Carlos Huante depicting Gandalf confronting a formidable Mûmak.
This new imagery signifies a notable change in how Sauron has been depicted in earlier seasons. The first image showcases Sauron adorned with Morgoth’s Iron Crown, seemingly abandoning his Annatar guise and reverting to a darker aesthetic reminiscent of his season one Halbrand appearance. Empire’s caption accompanying the reveal made the tonal shift clear, simply stating that the Dark Lord returns.
This transformation aligns directly with the narrative trajectory of the story. Season two concluded with Sauron at his most powerful, having secured the Nine Rings for Men and commanded the Orc army, before standing with Fëanor’s hammer in Annatar form to initiate the forging of the One Ring.
According to the official synopsis, Season 3 will leap forward several years from the events of Season 2, taking place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron. The Dark Lord aims to craft the One Ring, which will grant him the advantage needed to dominate the war, bind all peoples to his will, and ultimately rule all of Middle-earth.
This larger conflict extends beyond Sauron’s personal journey. Season three will also explore the ongoing decline of Númenor as Pharazôn’s tyrannical ambitions hasten the island kingdom’s downfall, alongside significant developments in Gandalf’s journey now that the Stranger has embraced his true name.

This latest reveal comes amidst a franchise that has emerged as one of Prime Video’s most significant success stories. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ has attracted 185 million viewers since its launch, solidifying its status as one of the platform’s most-watched series to date.
The scale of investment has also persisted behind the scenes, with the show remaining one of the most expensive television productions ever, with its first two seasons alone estimated to have cost Prime Video over one billion dollars.
Season 3 will also introduce new cast members, including Jamie Campbell-Bower, Eddie Marsan, and Andrew Richardson, alongside returning stars like Charlie Vickers and Morfydd Clark as Galadriel. With production completed and marketing efforts ramping up, fans finally have solid details to cling to after months of speculation.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video this November, bringing Sauron’s long-anticipated war for Middle-earth into full view.
