Film festivals often focus on the films themselves, but occasionally a moment on the red carpet captures everyone’s attention. At this year’s BFI London Film Festival, Scarlett Johansson’s smile became that standout moment.

She arrived for a busy day of events, showcasing two very different films at the festival. The day was filled with stunning red dresses, laughter, and plenty of excitement.

The 70th BFI London Film Festival kicked off on October 7, attracting major stars like Robert Pattinson, Adam Driver, Jenna Ortega, Sebastian Stan, and Cynthia Erivo. Johansson is presenting two films at the event, both of which premiered on Saturday, October 10.

She began the day with the world premiere of ‘Ray Gunn’, Brad Bird’s long-awaited animated noir, at the Royal Festival Hall. Co-star Sam Rockwell and Bird joined her for photos. The film has a runtime of 119 minutes, with a second screening scheduled for the BFI IMAX on October 17.

The images that ignited social media came from her red carpet interviews. In these moments, Johansson is seen mid-laugh, her blonde bob swaying as she holds a BFI-branded microphone and engages with reporters.

Dressed in a red gown with thin straps and a gold collar-style necklace, her expression radiates joy. In one shot, she grins with her eyes tightly shut, while in another, she throws her head back in laughter. Coverage of the day highlighted her smile as much as her outfit, with one outlet noting it was a smile fans couldn’t overlook.

This candidness offers a refreshing contrast to the typical polished poses seen on the carpet. These images reveal a star genuinely enjoying the moment.

Her radiant smile was complemented by serious fashion choices. For ‘Ray Gunn’, Johansson wore a red strapless Hermรจs Resort 2027 dress paired with red Manolo Blahnik Leva sandals and a delicate Cece Jewellery pendant.

Later that evening, she changed for the gala screening of ‘Paper Tiger’, donning a custom red Prada silk georgette gown. The bias-cut dress featured a ruched, draped bodice and was accessorized with a Barron London necklace.

The red theme was unmistakable. One outlet humorously remarked that when your name is Scarlett, you wear scarlet.

At the ‘Paper Tiger’ premiere, Johansson posed alongside co-star Adam Driver and director James Gray. Driver sported an all-black suit, matching shirt, and tie, while Johansson appeared in high spirits as they reunited for photographs.

The film is a crime drama centered around a suburban American family in the 1980s who become entangled with the Russian mafia. Miles Teller also stars.

There’s more at stake than just a memorable red carpet appearance. Neon, the film’s distributor in the U.S. and U.K., is reportedly planning to campaign for Johansson to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role.

Neon also aims to advocate for Teller for Best Actor and Driver for Best Supporting Actor. Johansson, now 41, has received two Oscar nominations and is a BAFTA winner but has yet to secure an Academy Award.

‘Paper Tiger’ is set to open nationwide in the United States on November 20, with no confirmed release date for the U.K. The Oscars will take place in March 2027.

Part of the allure of these appearances is their rarity. Johansson avoids social media, leaving her fans often without updates for months, making red carpet events a key opportunity to see her.

Witnessing her laugh so freely on a day filled with two premieres feels like an added treat. It also suggests how comfortable she is with both projects, one being a heartfelt animated noir and the other a gripping crime drama with award aspirations.
