‘Scary Movie 6’ Originally Included a Melissa Barrera Joke Before ‘Scream 7’ Changes
During the making of Scary Movie 6, a joke referencing Melissa Barrera and her departure from the Scream franchise was ultimately cut from the final version.
Director Michael Tiddes shared in a spoiler discussion with The Hollywood Reporter that this gag was part of an alternate ending but was removed during post-production as the creative team reassessed its timing and tone.
Tiddes noted that the joke was conceived while the film’s ending was being reworked alongside another significant change. The team was already adjusting the finale through additional photography, and the Barrera reference was part of a larger set of ideas connected to the film’s relationship with the latest Scream installments. However, as Scream 7 was also in development, the filmmakers decided to eliminate the reference.
He explained that there was no direct collaboration with the Scream 7 team, and both projects were developed independently without shared scripts or communication. This separation meant that the Scary Movie 6 team had to make its own judgment about the appropriateness of the joke as Scream 7’s direction became clearer through public marketing.
In the interview, Tiddes mentioned that the idea initially seemed to fit within the franchise’s meta style, which often includes commentary on real-world Hollywood events and casting controversies. He indicated that the joke aligned with the tone of earlier drafts, but as the ending evolved and the film’s structure changed, the reference no longer felt necessary.
He also recognized that audience reactions to Barrera’s exit were mixed, adding another layer of sensitivity. While he did not provide specific details about the joke, he made it clear that the team considered audience perception before deciding to remove it. The goal was to keep the film focused on broader parody elements rather than a specific real-world situation that might detract from the story.

The removal coincided with other significant rewrites in the film’s final production stages. Scary Movie 6 underwent additional photography to refine its ending, during which several ideas were either added or cut to better align with the movie’s final tone. The Barrera reference was among the elements that did not make the cut.
Tiddes emphasized that the franchise thrives on quickly responding to pop culture, but also on knowing when to exclude certain material if it risks overshadowing the comedy. He suggested that while the joke may have fit in an earlier draft, the changing context around both franchises made it less suitable by the time of release.
Ultimately, the Melissa Barrera joke became one of several ideas cut from a script that was constantly evolving. Its removal reflects the film’s broader approach during post-production, where timing, cultural sensitivity, and shifting franchise developments all played a role in determining what remained in the final cut of Scary Movie 6.
