Sebastian Stan Confirms He Will Play Harvey Dent in ‘The Batman: Part II’
Matt Reeves has dedicated years to meticulously crafting his dark, noir-inspired vision of Gotham City, and each new casting announcement for the franchise’s sequel has only heightened the excitement. Since the release of 2022’s ‘The Batman,’ which introduced Robert Pattinson’s brooding portrayal of the Dark Knight, fans have been eagerly guessing which iconic villain would take center stage in the follow-up.
This year, speculation intensified as reports linked Marvel star Sebastian Stan to one of Gotham’s most notorious characters. Stan was cast in an undisclosed role in the sequel directed by Matt Reeves, with many believing he would portray Harvey Dent.
Now, Stan has confirmed this speculation himself. In an interview with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, he disclosed that he will indeed take on the role of Harvey Dent in the upcoming Batman sequel, putting an end to months of uncertainty regarding his character.
Known for his role as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stan is making the switch to DC for this part. Harvey Dent has been portrayed by various actors in the past, including Aaron Eckhart in 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight,’ Billy Dee Williams in 1989’s ‘Batman,’ Tommy Lee Jones in 1995’s ‘Batman Forever,’ and most recently, Harry Lawtey in 2024’s ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’
Earlier this year, Stan shared his thoughts on joining the project, highlighting the tone and ambition that Reeves is bringing to the sequel. “[It’s] a challenge, like everything else. I feel like it’s a really ambitious movie and I think if we do it all right — and obviously I’m so excited about Matt Reeves [directing] because he’s been one of my favorites for a long, long time — I really think it’s going to blow people away. It’s going to surprise a lot of people, I think, too,” Stan told Deadline.
Stan confirmed that he would soon begin work on ‘The Batman: Part II,’ with production having started in London this past June. He will be joined by Scarlett Johansson, who is reportedly cast as Harvey’s wife Gilda Dent, and Charles Dance, rumored to portray his father. They will star alongside returning cast members Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Barry Keoghan as the Joker, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Jim Gordon.
The sequel is expected to delve deeper into Bruce Wayne’s character, examining the increasing corruption and political strife in Gotham City following the events of the first film and its spinoff series ‘The Penguin.’ This focus on institutional decay aligns perfectly with Dent’s storyline, as the character typically starts as an idealistic district attorney before circumstances lead him to become Two-Face.
Stan also reflected on the enduring appeal of characters like Batman, noting, “Obviously there’s a reason why Batman’s been re-occurring for so many years, and why so many kids love Spider-Man,” as he framed superhero narratives as vital stories for young audiences navigating their identities.
The film is slated for release in October 2027, giving fans ample time to speculate on how deeply Stan’s portrayal of Dent will explore the character’s eventual transformation. Given Reeves’ careful approach to worldbuilding throughout the franchise, few expect the journey to be straightforward or predictable.
With filming now in progress and Stan’s role officially confirmed, excitement for ‘The Batman: Part II’ continues to grow.
