Shia LaBeouf Sentenced to Probation After Pleading Guilty to Assault Charges
Actor Shia LaBeouf has received a probation sentence after pleading guilty to assault charges related to an incident that occurred during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans.
In court, LaBeouf admitted guilt to three counts of simple battery stemming from a confrontation outside a bar in the city’s renowned French Quarter. The actor, recognized for his roles in films such as ‘Transformers’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, was given a six-month suspended sentence and will be on probation for the next two years.
As part of his plea agreement, LaBeouf is required to complete an alcohol treatment program. He has also been instructed to maintain distance from both the victims involved in the incident and the bar where the altercation took place.
The case dates back to February when LaBeouf was arrested following a fight outside a New Orleans bar during Mardi Gras festivities. Police reports indicated that video footage captured the actor, who was shirtless at the time, pushing one individual to the ground and striking another in the face. Authorities suggested that the punch may have resulted in a serious nose injury.
Additionally, police alleged that LaBeouf repeatedly used homophobic slurs during the confrontation and while being taken into custody.
Following the sentencing, LaBeouf’s attorney Sarah Chervinsky stated that the actor wished to take responsibility for his actions.
She stated that LaBeouf wanted “to take accountability for his part in what happened” and described the incident as a “minor Mardi Gras bar tussle.”
Chervinsky also countered claims that the incident was driven by prejudice, asserting there was “no evidence it was about bias or prejudice.”
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams mentioned that prosecutors consulted with the victims before finalizing a plea agreement. According to Williams, the deal was offered only after confirming the victims supported the resolution.
One of the individuals involved, local entertainer Jeffrey Damnit, identified by police as Jeffrey Klein, has publicly discussed the incident. He alleged that LaBeouf approached him earlier in the evening, pushed him from behind, used homophobic slurs, and threatened him.
Damnit’s attorney, Michael Kennedy, expressed hope that the actor would benefit from treatment and learn from the experience.
“In New Orleans we are all equal, we should all feel safe, and we don’t treat people differently based upon relative fame,” Kennedy stated.
This latest case adds to a long history of public controversies surrounding the actor. Over the years, LaBeouf has faced multiple arrests and criminal charges, including a 2017 arrest in New York and another arrest later that year in Georgia while filming ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’.
In 2020, he was also charged with misdemeanor battery and petty theft in Los Angeles. That same year, singer and actress FKA twigs filed a lawsuit accusing LaBeouf of physical and emotional abuse during their relationship, which was ultimately settled in 2025.
After his arrest in New Orleans, LaBeouf was ordered to return to drug and alcohol rehabilitation. However, shortly after, he told journalist and YouTuber Andrew Callaghan that he did not believe alcohol was the primary cause of his behavior.
During that interview, LaBeouf stated that the issues were more related to “anger and ego” than drinking. He also made controversial comments regarding the incident and his interactions with members of the LGBTQ+ community.
LaBeouf first gained fame as a child actor on the Disney Channel series ‘Even Stevens’ before becoming a prominent Hollywood star. While his acting career includes several blockbuster films, his legal troubles and personal controversies have often garnered just as much attention as his on-screen work.
With the plea deal now finalized, the actor will avoid jail time as long as he adheres to the conditions of his probation and treatment program.
