Sony Pictures has achieved one of the most significant box office successes in cinematic history with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ yet this triumph does not indicate that the studio will be advancing with additional Spider-Man spin-off films.

In the wake of the record-setting debut of the latest Spider-Man film, many fans anticipated that Sony would unveil new plans for its Marvel character universe. However, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman delivered a more cautious update, indicating that there are currently no new spin-off projects in development.

In an interview with Variety following the impressive launch of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Rothman was questioned about the future of Sony’s Marvel character films. While the studio has previously released movies focused on characters like Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter, Rothman stated that there are no new projects actively being pursued at this time.

“Right now, we don’t know,” Rothman said when asked if Sony intends to continue expanding its Marvel character lineup. He further clarified that Sony has never considered these films as part of a larger shared universe.

“We never looked at it as the ‘Sony-Marvel Universe.’ We looked at if there were worthwhile movies to make with other characters. At the moment, there are none in active development.”

This update is disappointing for fans eager to see Sony continue to build narratives around Spider-Man’s supporting characters. While the Venom trilogy has proven to be a commercial hit, several of the studio’s recent Marvel offerings have struggled both critically and at the box office.

During the discussion, Rothman was also asked why films like ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Madame Web’ failed to resonate with audiences. He kept his response straightforward, acknowledging that the ultimate decision lies with moviegoers. “Ultimately, the audience wasn’t satisfied enough with them,” he remarked.

Rothman emphasized that it does not matter if the criticism was warranted, as the audience ultimately has the final say. “The audience is the boss, and they didn’t respond. It’s as simple as that.”

While the future of spin-off films remains unclear, Rothman expressed a more optimistic outlook regarding Spider-Man himself. He confirmed that there is still a chance Tom Holland may return for another film, although no official decisions have been made.

When asked if another Spider-Man sequel featuring Holland could occur, Rothman simply replied, “Yes.” He also mentioned that the studio hopes the actor is interested in continuing to portray Peter Parker in future films.

This interview followed the enormous opening weekend of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which, according to Variety, earned $360 million domestically and $932 million globally, making it one of the largest openings in box office history. The film also contributed to the biggest overall weekend ever for theaters, alongside Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey.’

Rothman believes this success demonstrates that audiences still crave the theatrical experience, despite ongoing concerns about the future of cinemas.

“What happened is miraculous,” he told Variety. “‘Spider-Man’ is uniting people across cultures and ages. People can piss on theatrical all they want, but that’s one thing that only movies — and movie theaters — can do.”

For now, Sony seems to be concentrating on Spider-Man rather than expanding its roster of Marvel spin-offs. While the possibility remains for Tom Holland’s future as Peter Parker, Rothman’s latest remarks suggest that fans should not anticipate announcements regarding new standalone films featuring Spider-Man’s supporting characters anytime soon.
