‘Speak No Evil’ Star James McAvoy Reveals He’s Lost Roles for Surprising Reasons
Casting choices in Hollywood are shaped by a variety of factors, and actors frequently discuss how unexpected some of these reasons can be. Elements like appearance, height, or even how well an actor visually pairs with another can influence whether they land a role. Such topics often arise during interviews with seasoned performers.
As their careers evolve, actors tend to share more about their personal experiences within the industry. These interviews provide insight into the behind-the-scenes dynamics, particularly regarding auditions and casting feedback that the public rarely sees.
In a previous interview reported by The Telegraph, actor James McAvoy discussed how he has occasionally been overlooked for roles due to his height. He noted that this issue has arisen multiple times throughout his career.
McAvoy stated, “As a shorter man, I sometimes get told I’m too short for a role.” He further explained that even when he secures a part, there are often comments regarding his height behind the scenes, saying, “Or even when I get a role, I’m made to feel like, well, of course, we’re going to have to do something about that.”
Standing at approximately 5ft 7in, McAvoy also recounted a personal incident involving a former co-star who questioned his credibility as a romantic lead. He remarked, “That was a kick in the nuts.” He elaborated on how uncomfortable that experience became during filming.
McAvoy noted that this type of scrutiny extends beyond height to overall appearance. He expressed, “Sometimes you’re made to feel like you’re not good-looking enough to get a role.”
Known for his performances in films such as ‘X-Men: First Class’, ‘Atonement’, ‘Wanted’, ‘Filth’, and ‘The Last King of Scotland’, McAvoy has established a robust career in both film and theatre despite the challenges he highlighted in the interview.
