‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Trailer Leaks Online, Chris Miller Responds

The ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise has faced a tumultuous journey leading to its finale, enduring years of delays, speculation, and shifting release dates since ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ left fans hanging in 2023. Now, just as excitement for the trilogy’s conclusion was rekindling, the film has encountered a new setback.

Sony’s animated Spider-Man franchise has always been protective of its content, meticulously controlling every teaser and reveal associated with the series. However, this week, that control was compromised when unauthorized footage from the eagerly awaited third installment surfaced online without the studio’s approval.

The trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ which is set to premiere in theaters on June 18, 2027, reportedly leaked on X this week, quickly spreading across the platform and garnering millions of views before Sony could intervene.

Co-writer and producer Christopher Miller addressed the leak on Friday, expressing his frustration candidly. He took to social media to share that he disapproves of leaks involving unfinished or unpolished footage.

The leaked footage is said to run approximately four minutes and 40 seconds, beginning with the final moments of ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ where Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, encounters both his Uncle Aaron and an alternate-reality version of himself. Reports indicate that the footage also features action sequences and reunions with Gwen and Miles’ parents towards the end, though it remains uncertain if this reflects what Sony’s official trailer will ultimately present.

Reactions from fans who viewed the leaked clips were mixed, with some expressing disappointment over the animation style, which appeared less polished than the franchise’s Oscar-winning visuals. This aligns with Miller’s explanation that the footage was never intended for public viewing in its current, incomplete state.

This incident is not unique to Hollywood this year. Just weeks prior, both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ two billion-dollar blockbusters, experienced similar leaks on X following their theatrical releases.

Earlier this year, a more serious breach occurred when the full version of ‘Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender’ leaked online months ahead of its scheduled Paramount+ streaming release. This incident led to the arrest of a 26-year-old man in Singapore, accused of illegally accessing a media server to leak the film.

Cast members from that project later publicly condemned the breach, urging fans not to watch the unauthorized version. Star Eric Nam emphasized the importance of respecting the years of effort invested by creators, framing proper viewing as a genuine appreciation for the art form, comments he shared with Variety at Comic-Con following that earlier leak.

For ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ this latest leak comes after a development phase marked by repeated delays and swirling rumors regarding the project’s status. Miller has had to publicly counter claims that Sony had scrapped significant portions of the film, asserting as recently as last year that nothing had been discarded and that production was progressing steadily.

With the film’s official release still nearly a year away, Sony now faces the challenge of managing fan expectations shaped by this unfinished, leaked footage rather than the polished vision the studio intended to unveil on its own terms.

Given the franchise’s history of adjusting through delays to safeguard its reputation, it wouldn’t be surprising if this leak only strengthens the studio’s determination to keep everything under wraps until it is fully prepared.
