Superhero films have faced significant challenges at the box office in recent years, grappling with franchise fatigue and a competitive streaming environment that has made blockbuster openings feel less common. Even reliable franchises have found it difficult to recreate the excitement that once characterized the genre’s peak.

Heading into the release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ Sony and Marvel Studios had reasons to be cautiously optimistic, thanks to Tom Holland’s successful portrayal of the character. However, few anticipated just how impressive its opening weekend would be.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has debuted globally with an astounding $875 million, officially marking it as the second-biggest opening weekend in box office history, second only to ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

This impressive worldwide total breaks down to a domestic take of $355 million and approximately $550 million from international markets, allowing the film to surpass nearly every other release in Hollywood history within a single weekend. Only ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which opened to $1.2 billion globally in 2019, ranks higher.

The domestic figure alone is remarkable. At $355 million, ‘Brand New Day’ narrowly missed ‘Endgame’s’ all-time three-day domestic record of $357 million, making it the second-largest weekend opening in North America and placing Marvel Studios in the unique position of holding the four biggest domestic openings ever recorded.

The film also set new records during its journey to this total, achieving all-time highs for preview screenings and opening-day grosses before the weekend concluded. Its Friday earnings of $168 million, bolstered by early access screenings, surpassed the previous opening-day record held by ‘Endgame.’

Internationally, the film’s release benefited from strong midweek starts in key markets, including China, where it began screening days before its North American debut. This early launch helped the film approach the billion-dollar milestone well before its first full week in theaters, outpacing most releases from earlier this year.

This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering that ‘Brand New Day’ lacked the nostalgia factor of its predecessor, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which featured previous Spider-Man actors in a multiverse crossover. This time, Holland’s Spider-Man carried the film largely on the character’s strength and positive critical reception, earning a 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade from CinemaScore.

Alongside the ongoing success of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which added another $51 million in its third weekend, these two films contributed to one of the largest collective box office weekends ever recorded, reaffirming that audiences are still eager to attend films that offer the right mix of spectacle and star power.

As projections continue to rise with final numbers coming in, industry experts are already speculating whether ‘Brand New Day’ can close the gap on ‘Endgame’s’ long-standing global opening record. Regardless of the outcome, the film has already changed the narrative around what a modern theatrical release can achieve in a single weekend.

For a franchise that many believed had reached its peak, ‘Brand New Day’ has demonstrated that there is still significant potential ahead.
