‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Almost Featured Epic Villain Showdown, Says Destin Daniel Cretton
Marvel’s upcoming sequel, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, is gearing up for its July 31 release with an impressive lineup of villains. Drawing from deep comic lore, the film includes characters like Scorpion, Tombstone, Boomerang, and a group of Hand ninjas, ensuring that Peter Parker’s latest adventure is filled with formidable threats.
Interestingly, this already robust roster was nearly expanded even further. Director Destin Daniel Cretton recently shared insights about the film’s development, revealing that ‘Brand New Day’ was close to featuring one of the most villain-packed sequences in Spider-Man’s cinematic history.
In an interview with Nerdtropolis, Cretton confirmed that the film initially included a massive fight scene featuring numerous classic villains, which was ultimately cut. He explained that the creative team had designed many of these characters before deciding to remove the sequence entirely.
Cretton described the experience as genuinely enjoyable, noting that the team drew inspiration from classic comics while developing the scrapped scene. Rather than discarding the character designs, he hinted that these villains could potentially appear in future installments.
This decision mirrors a similar one made by Marvel with last year’s ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’, which also featured an extended opening sequence showcasing the team battling classic villains before it was trimmed for pacing. ‘Brand New Day’ appears to have followed a similar path, focusing on the threats that drive the film’s core plot.
Even without the cut sequence, the film’s confirmed villain roster is impressively deep. Michael Mando reprises his role as Scorpion, fulfilling a tease from 2017’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, while Tarantula, Boomerang, and Ramrod make their live-action debuts alongside Marvin Jones III’s portrayal of Tombstone.
Cretton has also hinted at considering the inclusion of familiar superheroes like Shang-Chi during the film’s development, indicating that the project initially had a broad scope before settling on its final, more focused version. Given the packed nature of the finished movie as seen in trailers, one can only imagine how expansive that original cut sequence must have been.
Producer Amy Pascal has expressed her hope that Cretton will continue to direct future Spider-Man films, praising his ability to blend thrilling action with emotional character development. This ongoing collaboration could provide a perfect opportunity for the previously designed but unused villains to eventually make their way to the screen.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set to swing into theaters on July 31, fans are left wondering what a potential fifth Spider-Man film might entail. Given the wealth of material Cretton and his team developed and shelved for this installment, the next chapter could come with a significant head start on its own rogues gallery.
Which classic villain would you most like to see included in a future Spider-Man film after being cut from ‘Brand New Day’? Share your thoughts in the comments.
