‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has officially made box office history. After the final numbers were tallied, Tom Holland’s latest Marvel adventure has claimed the title for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, surpassing a record that many thought would endure for years.

According to the final Monday actuals, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ earned $360 million from 4,487 theaters across North America during its opening three days. This impressive figure puts the film ahead of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which previously held the record with a $357.1 million opening weekend in 2019.

The updated total even exceeds Sony Pictures’ original estimate of $355 million, transforming what was already a remarkable debut into a historic achievement. The movie is now only the second film ever to open above $350 million domestically, joining ‘Endgame’ in one of the most exclusive box office clubs in Hollywood history.

The success continues a remarkable year for Spider-Man. ‘Brand New Day’ now holds the top four biggest domestic opening weekends ever associated with the character, including previous franchise entries. This list features ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ with $260.1 million, followed by ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ at $257.7 million and ‘The Force Awakens’ at $248 million.

The latest film also completely dominates the Spider-Man franchise rankings. ‘No Way Home’ previously held the record for the largest opening weekend for a live-action Spider-Man movie, but ‘Brand New Day’ has now surpassed it by a significant margin.

The movie’s record-breaking journey began even before the weekend kicked off. ‘Brand New Day’ set new records for the largest Thursday preview performance and the biggest Friday opening day in domestic box office history. It also became Sony Pictures’ biggest launch ever.

Before its release, expectations were much more modest. Sony had initially projected a domestic opening of around $195 million and a global debut near $465 million. While that would still have been a considerable success, the final numbers far exceeded what the studio anticipated.

Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman stated that the greatest victory was not the records but the audience’s response. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rothman explained, “There are many, many, many people going to see the movie. What’s far more important to me, and what is far more significant, is the response. The audience loved the movie. That’s way more important to me than this record or that record.”

Audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. The film earned an A CinemaScore from opening weekend viewers and currently boasts a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have also responded favorably, with the movie receiving a 90% critics score.

The strong performance has also led to changes in plans for premium screenings. IMAX announced that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will now share some screens with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, allowing more fans to experience the superhero film in the large-format theater experience.

The movie features Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the story follows Peter Parker as he navigates life after the events of ‘No Way Home’ while confronting a new and dangerous threat.

With a $360 million opening already secured, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has positioned itself among the biggest theatrical events ever. The question now remains: how high can the film climb as its worldwide box office run continues?
