‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Breaks Five-Year Presales Record Ahead of Release
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up for an exciting summer, and few upcoming films are generating as much buzz as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and penned by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the film features Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya as MJ. The cast also includes Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, and Liza Colón-Zayas, with Mark Ruffalo, Jacob Batalon, Tramell Tillman, and Michael Mando rounding out the ensemble, hinting at significant MCU connections.
Set in the aftermath of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ the story follows Peter Parker as he navigates a world that has forgotten him. The pressure of watching his friends move on without him leads to changes he may struggle to control, especially as an unseen villain threatens everything he holds dear.
A newly released trailer has given fans a glimpse of Ruffalo’s return as the Hulk, with Peter seeking help from Dr. Bruce Banner, who has discovered a method to suppress mutating DNA.
Amidst the growing excitement, advance ticket sales for the film have been remarkable. According to Deadline, ‘Brand New Day’ has achieved the best first-day presales in five years and the strongest of the year so far. Early tracking numbers indicated that it was already topping the summer slate in audience interest.
Fandango confirmed that this superhero adventure has become the ticketing service’s biggest first-day ticket pre-seller of the year, surpassing titles like ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ ‘Project Hail Mary,’ and ‘The Odyssey’ as the largest traditional movie launch of 2023.
The film is also making history for Fandango, ranking among its top ten all-time first-day ticket pre-sellers. While specific dollar figures have yet to be confirmed, advance sales have exceeded $37 million, already surpassing the record set by ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ after its own first-day sales.
This achievement is significant, as the last time presales records were broken was for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which garnered an estimated $78 million in advance sales before its December 2021 opening, ultimately achieving the second-best domestic opening ever at $260.1 million, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is also believed to have surpassed the record set by ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ which opened to $187.4 million domestically.
What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is the context. ‘Brand New Day’ is debuting without IMAX, as those premium screens remain dedicated to Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which opened two weeks earlier.
Despite Tom Holland’s injury on set, the film has maintained its July 31 release date, and anything less than a $200 million domestic debut would be surprising, with only ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in contention to surpass it as the year’s biggest release.
Director Cretton shared his thoughts on the franchise’s future with some ambiguity during a conversation on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, stating, “Is there ever a last Spider-Man? Everyone should go to this (movie) as if it’s the last Spider-Man.”
With presales already rewriting the record books before the film has even premiered, the question of whether this Peter Parker era is truly coming to a close feels more relevant than ever. Given how ‘No Way Home’ utilized multiverse elements to achieve its historic success, can ‘Brand New Day’ replicate that phenomenon, or does its more grounded narrative work in its favor?
