‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Casting Detail Sparks Fans’ Reaction Over Age Gap
Casting decisions in major films often attract significant attention, particularly when it comes to the lead heroes and villains. However, occasionally a minor detail captures the spotlight, leading to a wave of online discussion. This is precisely what has occurred with a specific family dynamic featured in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’
The film has made headlines with its impressive box office performance, but fans have turned their attention to a more intricate detail: the age difference between two actresses portraying sisters on screen. What began as a casual observation has quickly evolved into a surprising reaction on social media.
The focus is on Sadie Sink and Olivia Booth-Ford, who portray Jean Grey and her older sister Sara Grey, respectively. While Sara is depicted as the elder sibling in the storyline, Booth-Ford is actually just 16 years old, whereas Sink, playing the younger Jean, is 24, resulting in an eight-year real-life age gap that contradicts the characters’ fictional age order.
This flashback sequence carries significant emotional weight within the film. Jean and Sara are shown to have lived together after their mother abandoned them upon the emergence of their mutant powers, with Sara also possessing her own telepathic abilities. Their lives take a drastic turn when the Department of Damage Control captures Sara, claiming she is being held for study, but in reality, she undergoes brutal experiments that greatly influence Jean’s journey throughout the film.
Sara Grey is not a completely new character in Marvel Comics, although she has remained relatively obscure. Introduced in 1966 as Jean’s older sister, she didn’t make her first appearance until 1980’s X-Men #136 during the Dark Phoenix Saga, when Jean revealed her mutant identity to her family.
Interestingly, casting rumors prior to the film’s release suggested a different direction for the family casting. Initial reports indicated that Sink’s younger sister, Jacey Sink, who has portrayed younger versions of Sadie’s characters in both ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Whale,’ might appear in ‘Brand New Day’ as a young Jean. However, this rumor was later retracted by the same insider, who clarified that while a Grey sister character was indeed included, she would be played by Booth-Ford instead of Sink’s real-life sibling.

Sink’s role as Jean Grey had been one of the worst-kept secrets during the promotional phase, with the actress skillfully dodging questions until the film confirmed her character outright, eliminating any secondary aliases or misdirection once audiences saw her on screen. Her portrayal is anticipated to return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ before leading Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ film.
For now, the surprising real-life age difference between Sink and Booth-Ford has become yet another detail fans are analyzing as they digest everything ‘Brand New Day’ has to offer. It serves as a reminder that even in a film centered around record-breaking box office success and major mutant revelations, sometimes it’s the smallest casting nuances that resonate with audiences the most.
