Marvel movies have created a unique culture around unresolved threads left in post-credits scenes, hinting at future crossovers and plot developments long before they come to fruition. While some of these teases get resolved within a film or two, others linger for years, becoming running jokes among fans who question if the studio remembers them at all.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already made waves with its record-breaking box office performance and a series of unexpected reveals since its release. However, its conclusion has left viewers with a new mystery, particularly regarding Ned Leeds’ Spidey Tracker app, which unexpectedly shows Peter Parker located far from Earth.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has addressed this ambiguous ending, linking it back to an unresolved plot point from his previous work. In an interview with TheWrap, Cretton assured fans that they “will find out” what the tracker’s reading signifies.

Cretton explained his perspective: “I do think it’s frustrating when these things are left out in the open and you never see them. And ‘Shang-Chi’ is one of those. It’s still hanging out there. I have every intention of answering the question.” This statement not only reassures fans about ‘Brand New Day’s’ cliffhanger but also acknowledges that he still owes fans closure on a mystery dating back to 2021.

The reference to ‘Shang-Chi’ highlights that film’s post-credits scene, where Wong, Bruce Banner, and Captain Marvel investigate the enigmatic Ten Rings and discover they are sending a signal to an unknown location. The true origin of the rings was intentionally left unresolved, with screenwriter Dave Callaham revealing that two different origin stories were filmed before the decision was made to leave the question open.

Cretton has previously noted that these post-credits snippets are designed to provoke questions rather than provide answers, and he hasn’t discouraged fan theories about what the beacon signal might ultimately indicate. This is why his recent comments carry significance; he’s not merely teasing another mystery box but is referencing a specific prior example and promising it’s still on his radar years later.

Fan theories surrounding the ‘Brand New Day’ post-credits scene have already proliferated since the film’s debut, with some speculating that Spider-Man may be embarking on a space mission, while others believe it sets the stage for his future role in an upcoming ‘Avengers’ team-up.

By explicitly connecting ‘Brand New Day’s’ cliffhanger to the unresolved ‘Shang-Chi’ mystery, Cretton indicates that both plot threads may eventually converge, or at least that he feels a personal responsibility to resolve the dangling plot points within his segment of the MCU. For a franchise often criticized for teasing future installments without follow-through, this kind of accountability from a filmmaker is a refreshing change.

Whether these mysteries will be resolved in future Avengers films or through another avenue remains to be seen, but Cretton’s remarks suggest fans won’t have to wait indefinitely for answers.
