‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Expands to IMAX After Record-Breaking Domestic Opening
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is reaching new heights after its record-setting debut, as Sony Pictures’ latest Marvel installment officially expands to IMAX theaters across North America.
IMAX Corporation announced that Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man film will begin screening in the IMAX network starting Thursday, August 6. This decision follows the film’s impressive performance in international IMAX markets, particularly in China, Japan, and South Korea.
According to IMAX, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ generated $23 million from IMAX screenings in these three countries during its opening weekend. The film’s success in premium theaters underscores the audience’s desire to experience Peter Parker’s latest adventure on the largest screens available.
China emerged as the largest contributor, with the film earning $19 million in IMAX alone. This performance marked the highest IMAX opening weekend ever for a Spider-Man film in the country. IMAX also noted that this format accounted for 16% of the film’s total opening weekend box office in China, highlighting its significance in the movie’s international success.
South Korea also achieved a record-breaking result for the superhero sequel. The film garnered $2.4 million in IMAX during its opening weekend, setting a new record for the largest IMAX opening weekend in the market. IMAX screenings represented 9% of the movie’s opening weekend earnings in South Korea.
In Japan, where the film competed with other major releases for IMAX slots, ‘Brand New Day’ still managed to earn $2.2 million from IMAX theaters. The premium format accounted for an impressive 18% of the film’s opening weekend total there.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond commended the film’s performance, stating that Spider-Man remains one of the strongest superhero brands at the global box office.
“Spider-Man has been among the most bankable superheroes at the global box office for over two decades — with the franchise delivering $365 million in IMAX receipts to date — and Brand New Day is taking that legacy to new heights with its record-breaking opening weekend,” Gelfond remarked.
He added that IMAX anticipates more fans will experience the film in theaters, believing that the format will encourage repeat viewings.
The North American IMAX release will feature an interesting scheduling situation. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will share select digital IMAX locations with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ while Nolan’s film will continue to play exclusively in all 41 IMAX 70mm film locations worldwide.

‘The Odyssey’ has also achieved significant success for IMAX, earning over $221 million globally through the format. The film will continue to expand into more international markets, including South Korea, China, and Japan in the coming weeks.
The IMAX announcement follows a monumental opening weekend for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which reportedly became the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time after updated box office figures pushed its total to $360 million.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. The storyline follows Peter as he continues his fight against crime in a world where people no longer remember him, forcing him to confront loneliness while facing a new and dangerous threat.
With its record-breaking launch and upcoming IMAX expansion, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continues to demonstrate that audiences are eager to attend major superhero events on the largest screens available.
