‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Expected to Outperform ‘Michael’ in First Weekend Box Office
Box office tracking for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been an exhilarating journey this week, with projections rising almost hourly as new data comes in from theaters worldwide. What began as a cautiously optimistic forecast from Sony has evolved into one of the most closely monitored box office stories of the year.
That initial caution now seems increasingly misaligned with reality. Early estimates had the studio projecting a domestic opening just under $200 million, while independent trackers suggested figures as high as $250 million to $300 million—numbers that would already mark one of the biggest debuts in Spider-Man history.
Now, the film has surpassed even those optimistic projections. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ crossed the $200 million threshold at the global box office by Thursday alone, and it’s now tracking for a worldwide opening weekend between $950 million and $1.05 billion. This range could position it to become the highest-grossing movie of the year in its opening weekend, surpassing the megahit ‘Michael.’
This trajectory is particularly impressive when compared to the franchise’s previous box office performances. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ remains the high point, having opened to $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million globally in 2021, ultimately reaching a worldwide total of $1.9 billion.
The domestic aspect of this story has been equally explosive. Thursday preview screenings alone raked in $72 million, officially breaking the all-time previews record previously held by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $60 million. First-day domestic numbers also exceeded $167 million, setting the stage for a potential opening weekend that could challenge ‘Endgame’s’ all-time domestic record of $357 million.
Sony’s internal tracking had been notably more conservative than outside estimates leading up to the release, projecting a domestic start closer to $195 million and a global opening around $465 million. Those figures now appear to be significant underestimates based on the film’s actual performance in theaters.
Context is essential to understand just how exceptional this level of performance is. Only nine films in history have ever opened above $200 million domestically in a single weekend, and only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has ever surpassed $300 million. This means ‘Brand New Day’ is poised to join one of the most exclusive clubs in box office history, regardless of where its final numbers land.

International markets have significantly contributed to this momentum. Sony had anticipated between $275 million and $300 million from overseas territories ahead of the release, but early results indicate that the film is on track to exceed even those optimistic projections once all regions report in.
With strong reviews and virtually no significant competition through the rest of the summer, ‘Brand New Day’ has all the elements in place to transform this opening weekend into one of the defining box office moments of the year. The only remaining question is how close to the billion-dollar mark it will actually reach by Sunday.
