‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Faces Online Leak Yet Still Dominates Box Office
Tom Holland’s latest blockbuster has become the newest major film to fall victim to a growing online piracy issue after a full-length bootleg of Spider-Man: Brand New Day surfaced on X and quickly spread across the platform before being taken down.
The Sony and Marvel Studios sequel was uploaded to the Elon Musk-owned social media site on Friday morning, with the leaked copy rapidly reaching millions of users before its removal later that day. Deadline reported that it reached out to Sony for a comment regarding the situation.
This leak coincided with the film making headlines for a much more positive reason. Despite the unauthorized upload, Spider-Man: Brand New Day achieved a massive opening day at the box office, with early projections estimating its Friday earnings between $167 million and $173 million. If these figures hold, the film would surpass Avengers: Endgame’s $157.4 million opening day from 2019.
The incident is part of a troubling trend of high-profile movie leaks appearing on X. Just a week prior, a high-quality bootleg of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was shared on the platform, reportedly attracting millions of views before being removed. Universal responded to that leak by stating it had “immediately initiated takedown protocols.”
These repeated leaks have raised significant concerns among studios regarding the ease with which entire films can be distributed online. Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter and rebranded the platform as X in 2022, users with X Premium subscriptions have been allowed to upload much longer videos, including files that can last several hours. This feature has created a scenario where complete films can potentially be shared directly on the platform.
For major Hollywood releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which are backed by substantial production and marketing budgets, such leaks pose a serious challenge. Studios typically invest months building anticipation for theatrical releases, and the appearance of unauthorized copies online can significantly impact audience behavior and revenue.
However, the timing of the leak does not seem to have hindered the film’s theatrical momentum. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Holland as Peter Parker, Brand New Day has already generated significant fan interest following the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film’s opening numbers indicate that audiences are still flocking to theaters to experience it on the big screen.

This situation also underscores the ongoing struggle between entertainment companies and digital platforms over copyright protection. While studios have traditionally dealt with piracy through websites and file-sharing services, social media platforms have introduced a new challenge by enabling leaked content to spread instantly to millions of users.
As more major releases arrive each year, the industry will likely continue seeking new strategies to prevent full movies from appearing online before or during their theatrical runs. For now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains one of the biggest box office stories of the summer, even as Sony and Marvel navigate the unexpected challenge of an online leak.
