Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man has long been overshadowed by the box office achievements of his predecessors, but this past weekend sparked excitement among fans about a potential shift. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ hit theaters nearly five years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ reintroducing audiences to a world where Peter Parker’s secret identity has been forgotten.

The anticipation leading up to the release was immense, with early tracking and preview figures suggesting that Sony and Marvel were on the verge of a historic moment.

As the weekend unfolded, that excitement only intensified. ‘Brand New Day’ broke the record for the highest single day in box office history on Friday, raking in an impressive $168 million, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Earlier in the week, it also set a new all-time preview record with $72 million from early screenings, beating the $60 million that ‘Endgame’ earned in its Thursday previews back in 2019.

However, by the end of Sunday, ‘Brand New Day’ fell just shy of the ultimate prize. The film wrapped up its domestic opening weekend with an estimated $355 million, making it the second-largest opening weekend in box office history, missing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ record of $357 million by approximately $2 million. On Saturday alone, it generated $101.5 million, trailing behind ‘Endgame’s’ $109.2 million Saturday during its own landmark run.

Internationally, the film also performed remarkably, although it too landed just one spot short of the top. ‘Brand New Day’ added $573 million from global markets, bringing its worldwide total to $927 million, making it the second-largest global opening ever, following ‘Endgame’s’ $1.22 billion debut.

In conjunction with the ongoing success of ‘The Odyssey,’ which earned another $51 million domestically in its third weekend, the two films collectively generated the highest-earning weekend in domestic box office history, totaling around $430 million.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige commented on the impressive numbers once estimates were released, describing the results as a phenomenal opening and expressing gratitude to audiences for experiencing the film as intended. The film’s reception aligns with its financial success, boasting a 90 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade from CinemaScore exit polling, according to various sources tracking its release.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and featuring Holland alongside Zendaya, ‘Brand New Day’ had an estimated production cost of $225 million, excluding marketing expenses. This investment now appears to be well worth it, as the film also set a new all-time domestic opening record for Sony, surpassing the $260 million debut of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ four years ago.

Additionally, it marked the best opening weekend for both director Cretton and Zendaya individually, while ranking as Holland’s second-best opening, following only his role in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Whether ‘Brand New Day’ can close the gap on ‘Endgame’ in the coming weeks remains uncertain, especially with a Monday actuals report from Sony still pending, which could affect the final figures. For now, the film stands as the fourth Marvel release to secure a place among the four largest domestic openings of all time, highlighting the studio’s continued dominance even years after its ‘Endgame’ peak.

With ‘The Odyssey’ still performing well and major titles like ‘Dune 3’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on the horizon, this summer’s box office competition is shaping up to be one of the most intense in recent years.
