‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Presales Are So High One Analyst Won’t Share the Numbers
For years, superhero fatigue has been cited as the reason behind the underperformance of comic book films at the box office. This narrative has become the default assumption for the genre, leading studios and analysts to brace for diminishing returns with each new release.
However, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has made a significant comeback. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has been quietly building one of the most impressive presale campaigns in recent memory, showcasing numbers typically associated with a major cultural event rather than just another sequel.
This week, box office tracker EmpireCity Box Office reported that the presales are so astonishing that the analyst is hesitant to disclose the figures. They noted that this marks the first true mega tentpole opener in over two years, with the film set to have more screen space than most competitors.
The reluctance to reveal specific numbers speaks volumes, especially considering how transparent box office tracking usually is. This aligns with a broader trend, indicating that ‘Brand New Day’ is shaping up to be one of the defining box office stories of the year, even before a single ticket has been sold.
Deadline has confirmed that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ achieved the strongest first day U.S. presales of any film in five years, breaking the record previously held by ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which opened at $260.1 million domestically. Fandango also confirmed that the film has become its biggest single-day preseller of the year, surpassing even Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which had set its own records just weeks prior.
With domestic presales already exceeding $40 million and weeks still to go before its release, projections now estimate the film will open domestically north of $250 million, with some global forecasts reaching as high as $550 million for the opening weekend. Box Office Theory analyst Shawn Robbins described the film as summer’s final mega tentpole, highlighting the enduring popularity of the Spider-Man franchise across eight live-action films and two animated hits over more than two decades.
What makes these figures even more impressive is the format disadvantage the film faces. ‘Brand New Day’ will not have access to IMAX screens during its opening weekend, as those premium venues are committed to ‘The Odyssey’ for an exclusive period. Despite this, Spider-Man is generating historic demand without one of the key tools that typically boosts opening weekend numbers.
The film follows Peter Parker as he navigates a drastically altered world where no one remembers his secret identity, shifting toward a more grounded, street-level narrative following the multiverse chaos of ‘No Way Home.’ Zendaya returns as Michelle Jones Watson, alongside Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds, with the marketing campaign already achieving milestones, including a trailer launch that became one of the most viewed in history.
In an industry that has debated whether audience interest in superhero films has genuinely waned, ‘Brand New Day’ seems to be answering that question directly through ticket sales rather than opinion pieces. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swings into theaters on July 31.
