Tom Holland has not donned the Spider-Man suit for a solo film since 2021, and the four-year wait seems to have only intensified audience excitement for his return. ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’ has been quietly rewriting box office expectations over the past few weeks, even before the first ticket buyer has stepped into a theater.

The film continues the story from ‘No Way Home,’ following Peter Parker as he rebuilds his life in New York after erasing himself from everyone’s memory, including MJ, portrayed by Zendaya. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film is based on a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, marking a return to a more grounded, street-level storytelling style after the multiverse spectacle of the last installment.

This return has translated into impressive numbers that few analysts anticipated at this stage in the marketing cycle. According to the box office tracking account Global Box Office, ‘Brand New Day’ has already surpassed $40 million in domestic presale revenue and is projected to open above $250 million domestically, positioning it for one of the biggest superhero debuts in years.

Multiple outlets have confirmed this trajectory with solid data. Deadline reported that the film achieved the strongest first-day U.S. presales of any release in five years, while Fandango confirmed it became the platform’s largest first-day ticket preseller of 2026, surpassing titles like ‘Star Wars, The Mandalorian and Grogu’ and ‘Project Hail Mary’ in the process.

The context makes these numbers even more remarkable. ‘No Way Home’ opened to $260.1 million domestically back in 2021, marking the second-best opening weekend in box office history, only behind ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $357.1 million. That film had accumulated approximately $78 million in presales before its release. ‘Brand New Day’ is chasing similar heights primarily due to the pent-up demand for Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker.

The film is also facing unique challenges due to its release timing. ‘Brand New Day’ opens on July 31, just two weeks after Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ and will need to compete against a crowded summer slate that includes DC’s struggling ‘Supergirl’ release earlier in the season.

Cretton has remained intentionally vague about what this film signifies for the future of Holland’s Spider-Man. In a conversation with Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, he suggested that there may never be a definitive last outing for the character, encouraging audiences to view the film as if it could be just that. This ambiguity has only fueled online speculation about the story’s direction moving forward.

Beyond the presale achievements, ‘Brand New Day’ carries the burden of following one of the most successful entries in Marvel Cinematic Universe history. ‘No Way Home’ grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide during its theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing solo superhero film ever, a benchmark that casts a long shadow over this sequel.

Early tracking indicates that the film has already surpassed other recent MCU benchmarks in terms of advance interest, reportedly outpacing the presale momentum of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ which opened at $187.4 million domestically in 2022. If this momentum continues through the opening weekend, ‘Brand New Day’ would comfortably rank among the largest superhero debuts ever recorded.

With presale numbers this robust a full month before its release, ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’ has achieved something that most films struggle with, transforming pure anticipation into solid box office figures before critics or audiences have had a chance to weigh in. Whether the finished film meets that high expectation remains the only question left to answer.
