Chinese audiences have not always embraced superhero films as Hollywood studios would hope, with the genre facing significant challenges since the pandemic altered moviegoing habits globally. This trend has made China one of the toughest markets for any Marvel release to penetrate in recent years.

However, this trend seems to be shifting. As Tom Holland and Zendaya embark on their global press tour leading up to the film’s release, early box office indicators from China suggest that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ could reverse years of disappointing superhero performances in one of the world’s key theatrical markets.

According to Maoyan, China’s largest movie ticketing platform, advance screening and presale revenue for the film has already exceeded 30 million renminbi, approximately $4.4 million, well ahead of its July 31 release date. This total has continued to rise over six days of advance bookings, with the film surpassing pre-sale figures set by nearly every major comic book release since 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

These impressive figures position ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ ahead of the entire pre-sales collections of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’ in China, establishing a new post-pandemic record for comic book movie advance sales. This level of demand has led some analysts to predict that the film could become the first live-action Hollywood release since 2021 to surpass $100 million during its opening weekend at the Chinese box office.

Much of this momentum is directly linked to Holland and Zendaya’s in-person appearances across the region. The duo made a notable stop in Shanghai this week, attending an official event at the Shanghai Film Art Center as part of the film’s extensive global promotional tour, which has already taken them through cities like Madrid, Berlin, Rome, Paris, London, and Mexico City.

Holland’s visit generated its own buzz beyond the film, as he was spotted sightseeing in Shanghai wearing denim shorts from the Chinese brand Semir, purchased at their flagship store in Yuyuan Garden. The brand quickly seized the opportunity, promoting the item on social media and even organizing a special ‘Spider-Man’ fan screening event linked to the unexpected exposure.

This organic cultural crossover further emphasizes that this release is resonating in China beyond typical franchise enthusiasm. With six confirmed villains, the return of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, and Frank Castle’s Punisher making his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film’s scale has already garnered significant global attention ahead of its release.

China is just one aspect of a broader international rollout that has been steadily gaining traction for weeks. In India, the film has already accumulated approximately Rs. 15 crore in advance ticket sales with nearly two weeks still to go before its release, according to Pinkvilla, indicating that the strong presale momentum extends well beyond a single market.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has heavily leaned into this anticipation throughout the promotional campaign, framing the film as a potential emotional high point for Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker. Following the character-altering conclusion of ‘No Way Home,’ this next chapter sees Spider-Man navigating a world that no longer remembers him, adding real narrative stakes to match the box office excitement.

With five more days of advance bookings still available in China and additional screenings expected to commence before the release, the film’s presale totals show no signs of slowing down. Given how dramatically this release has already outpaced recent comic book competition in the region, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ seems set to become one of the biggest global box office stories of the year.
