‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Reportedly a Standalone Story With No Ties to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
A recent report about ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has fans reconsidering how Tom Holland’s upcoming solo adventure fits into the broader MCU landscape.
Insider Daniel RPK, known for his reliable Marvel insights, claims that the film has no narrative connections to ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ This positions the summer superhero film as a truly self-contained story, rather than a setup for the franchise’s next major crossover event.
Despite their close release dates, the two films are not expected to be linked. There has been ongoing speculation that Tom Holland may not even appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with many believing that Peter Parker is being reserved for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ instead.
The timeline supports this separation. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set in 2028 and confirmed to occur before ‘Doomsday,’ fitting into the 18-month gap established in the post-credits scene of ‘Thunderbolts.’ This film is currently the furthest ahead on the MCU timeline upon its release.
Early test screenings for ‘Brand New Day’ have reportedly received overwhelmingly positive feedback. However, a leak concerning the film’s ending suggests that Peter Parker misses his chance to rejoin the Avengers in time for Doomsday due to a significant plot twist that keeps Spider-Man otherwise engaged. If true, this could explain how the film can exist independently of the larger Avengers narrative without feeling like a dead end.
Critics and fans following the film’s marketing have praised its positioning as a street-level story rather than a crossover. Even with characters like Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, the film seems to be utilizing its connections to the wider MCU thoughtfully rather than relying on them.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ ‘Brand New Day’ marks Holland’s final film under his current contract with Sony and Marvel. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set for release on December 18, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17 of the following year.
For fans tired of every MCU entry feeling like homework for the next installment, the concept of a standalone Spider-Man story focused solely on Peter Parker’s own universe is an appealing proposition. Whether the film lives up to this promise will be revealed when it swings into theaters on July 31.
