‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Set for One of the Biggest Openings of the Decade
DiscussingFilm revealed an astonishing statistic this week, indicating that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is projected to achieve a domestic opening weekend between 230 million and 250 million dollars, a figure that would rank it among the largest theatrical debuts of the decade.
These estimates come from Box Office Pro’s long-range forecast, marking a notable increase from earlier predictions that had the film estimated at 180 million to 190 million dollars just days prior.
Box Office Pro’s official long-range forecast places ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ with a domestic opening weekend range of 230 million to 250 million dollars. This comes at a time when franchise IP has struggled in July, with underperformers like Supergirl and Moana, a trend that this film seems ready to overturn. Analyst Jeff Sneider had also forecasted a debut between 225 million and 245 million dollars, which may still underestimate the film’s current trajectory.
Presales have significantly contributed to the rising projections. Domestic presales have already surpassed 40 million dollars with weeks left until release, and some global estimates for the opening weekend are as high as 550 million dollars worldwide. Box Office Theory analyst Shawn Robbins described the film as summer’s final S-tier blockbuster tentpole, highlighting the Spider-Man brand’s enduring appeal across eight live-action films and two successful animated releases over more than two decades.
What makes the tracking even more remarkable is the format limitation the film is facing. ‘Brand New Day’ will not have access to IMAX screens during its opening weekend, as those premium venues are committed to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey through an exclusive window, meaning the film is generating unprecedented demand without one of the typical advantages that enhance opening weekend numbers.
If the higher end of the range holds, the film would fall just short of the franchise record. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ garnered 260.1 million dollars domestically in December 2021, and a 250 million dollar opening for ‘Brand New Day’ would be just below that mark while still representing a significant success for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. Even the more conservative estimates would place ‘Brand New Day’ ahead of Deadpool and Wolverine’s 211.4 million dollar debut, and well above Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Fantastic Four First Steps.
Anticipation for the film has been building for weeks, with test screenings reportedly receiving positive feedback, and some early reactions likening it to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 as the best film in the franchise’s history. Deadline has also confirmed that the film achieved the strongest first day United States presales of any release in five years, a record previously held by ‘No Way Home.’
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Sadie Sink. The film swings into theaters on July 31, and if these tracking numbers remain on their current path, it looks poised to deliver one of the most significant box office stories of the year.
